Help! Just moved to Santa Clara and need Dr recommendations!!

I just moved here from NC and am 13 weeks pregnant. I am completely overwhelmed with choosing an HMO or PPO and which Dr to see. Any advice would help!

  • I see Dr. Kunzel at Los Olivos Medical Group in San Jose (right by Good Samaritan Hospital on the border of Los Gatos). I have no complaints!

  • I see Dr. Truneh in Sunnyvale. She's with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF). I really like her.

I will be delivering at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

My Kaiser plan through work is an "HMO regular" plan which includes all radiology (ultrasounds), lab work, L&D admissions, and more.  [Translation: Regardless of whether I have natural birth or c-section, I will not get a bill].   I do have a copays for Rx, non-admitted emergency room visits and other office visits, however no copays so far when I go in to the doctor for the pregnancy related visits.    I am limited to their doctors & occasional lack of openings in schedules (might have to wait 3 weeks for a specialist, or for there to be a last minute cancellation that they can fit waiting list people into).  Also, if it's a more urgent but non-emergency matter, there is the advice nurse you can call 24/7.  They've been really helpful & can either set your mind at ease, suggest over the counter options, or schedule an appointment for the next/same day or might tell you to go into the emergency room/after hours clinic.  The advice nurse can have some prescriptions written without being seen (in cases like a UTI where symptoms are obvious when not pregnant) & it was ready in the pharmacy within an hour or so.  They also have doctors & pharmacists on-call with that system, with whom the nurses consult.  Even had a phone appointment with an on-call doctor call a few times .... no visit necessary & if the doctor was in my local practice, she'd have one more patient!)  It is also easy to email your doctor (some are more prompt at replying than others) or message them through the advice nurse.  Another that is nice about staying within their system is the records are electronic, even if you see a different doctor than usual, (s)he has the information from another (history, prescriptions, allergies, etc).  .... A friend without Kaiser had to bring her X-rays from her radiologist to her specialist when she had some serious internal health issues going on ... made me appreciate the online record system.

Kaiser have a variety of plans & doctors to chose from.  Easy to change doctors when you find someone you like (or do not like).  There also is no deductible with my plan, but a friend with a different plan through Kaiser (she's self-funded) & has the deductible to bring down her monthly plan costs.

  • Not sure if you still need recommendations. I live in Santa Clara and I am going to Bay Area Maternity & Women's Health in Cupertino.  They have 2 amazing midwives and deliver in El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos.  You can check out their website at www.bayarea maternity.com You can yelp their reviews for Lin Lee, CNP and Maria Greulich, CNP. Feel free to MSG me if you want more info.

Before I was pregnant I was going to Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Santa Clara. I was seeing Dr. Massey. I don't think she is taking new clients. I really like how she took her time with me and the convenient location.

  • I went to Kaiser Santa Theresa- OB was Dr Korkowski, He's great! If you already have little ones in need of a pediatric dentist, Dr. B (Dr. Barrera) is the best!!! He's in Campbell- offers free "peek-a-boo" visits before age of 2 (any age before)! He does not papoose the kids and parents are always welcome to be with children at all times. Pediatrician....if you have Kaiser the good thing is if you don't like one you can try another....
