My kid hates to be worn

And I'm going insane

I have difficult babies.  They scream all day and night, literally.  With DS1 we could go anywhere as long as I wore him.  Around the house it wouldn't work, but walking around the grocery store, mall or park all was good.

DS2 HATES to be worn.  I haven't figured out how to take care of DS1, calm DS2 down, and get anything done.

Any suggestions.  We've tried to Moby (big fat fail, screamed for an entire hour in it), a RS (mostly a fail, he'll settle for a few minutes but then scream again) and the Beco.

Regarding the Beco...am I the only one who can't figure out the infant insert?

Even weeks ago I tried it and it seemed WAY too short.  But the carrier is too big for him, he can't really get his legs apart enough to be seated in it properly.

BW was my backup plan for having 2 kids so developmentally close in age (they both have special needs and DS1 functions at about a 10month old level)

  • Sorry you are having a rough time :(  Some babies are definitely more particular about the carrier or position they are in.  I'm guessing you are trying upright tummy to tummy with legs out in both the moby and RS already?  Which beco do you have?  And he's screaming even when you are out walking around?

How does he like to be held?   Also, it sounds like he is screaming whether he is in the carrier or not - could it be that it's not so much the carrier but something else that's bothering him (food sensitivities, reflux)?

We have the Buttefly II.  Yep, upright tummy to tummy in the RS (with legs out he HATES his legs froggied, they're too stiff).  And I've tried the hug hold a front wrap cross carry because i'm way too uncoordinated with the hug hold in the moby.  He calms fine in our arms and likes to be held snuggled and upright.

We walked around Babies R Us for an hour last night getting some stuff for both kids and DS2 was in the Moby.  He screamed the entire time.  He had just eaten, was sleepy and should have just dozed off.  But nope.  He would settle and instantly just scream again.

  • Sounds a lot like DD.

    1) She had reflux and I had oversupply.  I hated to put her on meds, but it was important.

    2) We tried a lot of things, facing out in the bjorn was the only way she would be worn the first three months.  Yeah, it's not great for either of you, but neither is going insane.

    3) Keep trying.  On my back when she was older became the best way to wear her.  With a woven you can do this really early, though I didn't.

    Good luck!!

  • It might be that he finds the moby too hot or too confining.  And by 2 months, some babies have hit that "I want to see but I'm not really strong enough to turn my head enough" phase.  It could also be that if he has tummy troubles, being in the carrier is putting pressure on his tummy and making him uncomfortable.

How does he do in the beco?  If he is close to 15 pounds then he should be fine without the infant insert - but any baby goes in the built in harness in the beco (so there's the infant one and then the regular harness).  He might like that better.

A mei tai might be another carrier option - that would also allow you to do a high back carry whenever you felt ready - some babies really like the view from a high back carry.  A woven wrap would work for that as well but it sounds like maybe you'd prefer something that doesn't require a lot of wrapping.

DS wouldn't be worn for the first 2 months and then only in a pouch sling cradle carry where he could sort of see what was going on but still be right against me and supported. Pouch slings are a challenge to get sizing and positioning perfect but it was worth it for us. He was a big baby so we moved to a ring sling and other positions around 4 months and stayed in that until he was 28lbs, despite also having an Ergo, wrap, and mei tai. We did a lot of experimenting but in the end it came down to what he was comfortable in.

  • My first HATED the moby and things like the Babyhawk or slings. Instead, she only liked the Bjorn forward facing. My second is doing great with the Ergo with the infant insert (we just moved to only using the bolster little seat with it). The Becco Butterfly still doesn't fit right, but works great with my toddler.
