HFMD? Anyone?

Lucas was diagnosed with this today.. So far only mouth blisters and a fever.  He is sooooo miserable, grabbing at his mouth while screaming.  I'm giving advil for pain and fever.  Anyone have any experience, know of anything else that might help?  :-(

Re: HFMD? Anyone?

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry.  I've thankfully not had this experience yet, but unfortunately you'll find yourself in good company here I think.  The Dec Moms should be able to give you some good tips.  Hope your LO is feeling better soon!

  • Yeah, unfortunately several of our LOs have had it over the past few months!

DS had it on his cheek & in his mouth. He was miserable. He only had a fever for a few days, but the sores took forever to heal up.

We gave tylenol shortly before meals to try & make eating less painful for him. But he really didn't eat much for a few weeks...just had to keep him hydrated.

    GL!

  • Cold milk in a bottle worked for Alexander.  We were in the middle of weaning from bottles back when he got it, but I guess the sucking was easier and I wanted him to stay hydrated more than I wanted him to use the cup.  So you can try that!  He also wanted to eat cold yogurt or ice cream, because I guess cold felt good on his sores.

Other than just trying to comfort him and keep him fed, nothing more you can do!  We did a lot of couch cuddling and kissing, resulting in me getting HFM.  So just watch yourself as well.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm not as much worried about food than drink. He had MAYBE two cups of milk and one cup of juice/water all day and that is it for liquids. I tried a popsicle, he licked it and handed it back. I will try some yogurt and see if that works.  He's breaking my heart when he grabs his mouth and looks at me like whyyyyy mommy, please fix this. :-(. After I finally got him to stop screaming and fall asleep and I had 30 minute long sobfest myself.  Argh.
  • Ug, HFMD is awful! We gave both Tylenol and Advil which was the only way she could get relief. You can give both because they are processed by different organs in the body.

  • We usually use Ibupro off and on with Tylenol for pain and fever.

I think Jericho just had his first case late last week. He didn't have any mouth blisters, but did get a lot of little red dots all over his palms, fingers and ankle/calves...though they never full on blistered. Very slight fever but no real screaming or anything. I also got the red dots all over my hands a few days later, again not exploding blisters, and today woke up with cold like symptoms. I am not sure it was/is HFMD but that is what came to mind. The triplets have never had it, and so far looks like they didn't catch it from Jericho...or me.

Hope Lucas is feeling better soon!

  • So I've pretty much decided that HFMD should actually be spelled HELL cause that's what we are in.  :-/
