I can't always tell

If she's hungry, gassy, or just fussy. Am I the only one? A lot of times she's sucking her hands or making sucking movements. But she does that all the time! And my mom said babies just like to suck and it doesn't always mean she's hungry. Right now she eats every 2-3 hours. Sometimes she fusses constantly a lot in between so figuring she's in a growth spurt I've been feeding a lot more. But I don't know if she's really hungry those times. I feel like an idiot. The only way I feel like I'm really sure is if she's rooting. What's wrong with me? I'm still in survival mode it seems like. And she's over 3 weeks old! We have nothing close to a routine. I don't know if she's getting enough breast milk. I don't feel like I read to her or something play enough because she's usually so fussy when she's awake.

Re: I can't always tell

  • Nope, you're not alone! I have this issue with LO daily. For me it is usually right after he just ate, and sometimes while he's doing it he is yawning in between cries so I know he is just sleepy and doesn't know how to soothe himself. I wasn't going to use a paci until 4-6wks to make sure breastfeeding was well established, but his pediatrician checked his latch and she said it would be okay for us to introduce one. I try it when he gets like that and sometimes it works and he's asleep in no time, drops the paci and stays asleep, and other times he's so frustrated he can't keep the paci in his mouth so I give him the boob again and he comfort nurses and falls asleep, or I put my pinky (upside-down) in his mouth cuz he can't spit it out, and he usually calms down within a few mins. GL and don't feel bad, it's totally normal until we get used to our LOs various cries!

My LO is just over 3 weeks too and we're also going through this. I find the pacifier works great, she loves to just suck on something and will suck on her hand if we don't give her the pacifier. She's had it since she was less than a day old in the hospital and they also had to supplement her with a bottle but she isn't having any nipple confusion luckily. She breast feeds and gets breast milk in a bottle and is fine with either. Also I can't say enough good thing about the gas drops. When she gets gassy she gets real fussy but the gas drops settle her right down immediately. We went out and bought more just so we can have one bottle in our room, one in her room and one in her diaper bag.
