Hi! A couple nights ago, I took a First Response and got a faint line. I took another test the next evening and got a negative. Has this ever happened to anyone? I should be getting my period around the 13th. I keep reading that a line is a line and there's no way it would show at all if I wasn't pregnant and that false positives are very rare. I'm trying to relax, give it a few days, and not obsess, but that's easier said than done!
Re: Positive test followed by negative
This early on when your hcg levels are so low, the concentration of your urine can affect the test. You can get a line on one and a few hours later not get one if you've drank a lot of fluids.
Not to scare you - but there are also chemical pregnancies where you have a light line for a few days before you get your period around the same time you usually would. They are actually fairly common but most people don't even know it because they aren't testing that early.
Test with your urine first thing in the morning to get the most accurate test.
The directions say you can test at any time of the day.
Were they different tests? Sometimes tests are more sensitive than others.
As they say, a line is a line. Try testing with FMU. If you still are uncertain, ask your doctor for a blood test.
This is true, however I got a false positive after 4 years of infertility and DH and I were beside ourselves. Add to that our false positive was a Clearblue Digital and you can see why we were so shocked. I went to my RE the day after my + and had my HCG levels tested, I would suggest you do the same. You can always test the morning of for higher HCG concentration in your urine until your HCG levels come back from the lab.
This. If you can wait, that would be best, but I never could!
holy unnecessary snotty answer...how does saying the test said she can use it anytime equate her knowing everything?
Thanks, Lucy. Exactly my thoughts.
I hate to tell you my experience, since I fear it will not make you feel entirely better, but since you asked, yes, that has happened to me. Twice I have had a faint line that disappeared on a subsequent test (once it disappeared later that day, and another time it disappeared the next day); both times they turned out to be chemical pregnancies. Both times I ended up starting my "period" around the time I would have expected it, give or take a few days, and if I had not tested early, I never would have known. But just because that happened to me doesn't mean it will happen to you: it could, but I am sure for every story like mine there's a baby born to someone who had a less-than-clear POAS result.
Last but not least, because I was not expecting this pregnancy, I didn't test at all, so I definitely could have had the exact same come-and-go positives this time - and this baby has stuck (fingers crossed!). So for all we know, I might have experienced exactly what you're going through myself for a third time, and then had a (so far) healthy pregnancy after all.
Good luck!
