Working Moms

Back to work mon....no child care...help

I return to work on Monday since my maternity leave ends today. My mom is supposed to be the primary caregiver when I'm at work. A family member is on life support and she is going out of state to see him. This is all last min. What should I do about child care? I don't have anyone else to watch LO. Should I just tell my manager I can't come in? Also on Monday when I went into the office I was planning to ask my manager if I can work part time. Calling out last min doesn't look good. I don't to seem like I'm always going to have child care issues bc then my boss may not approve of a flexible work schedule. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

  • Assuming you have a partner, can you ask your partner to take the day?  Alternatively, you have no choice but to let your manager know of this last minute family emergency and I'd just be frank and apologetic.  Very sorry about your family member.

  • I don't have a lot of great advice other than start making phone calls and see if there is anyone you know who can help.  Even ask if they know anyone.  I got stuck once and a close friend's mom was able to help us out.  Good luck!

  • How long is your mom going to be gone?  Emergencies happen, maybe calling today and talking to your manager about it would help.

I second the suggestion for Dad to stay home with baby.

  • Thanks ladies. DH just started a new job last week. He can't take off from work this soon.
  • Does work have back up care?  Or can you find a place you can do drop off for one day?  I'm sure that's not how you want to spend your first day back at work.  Good luck...and sorry about your family member.

  • Can a stay at home mom friend help for a couple of days?  I've done that before when I was desperate.  She refused pay so I sent her a giftcard instead.  Or use care.com.  I'd be calling every friend I had and promise to repay the favor when they need it.
  • Call everyone you know and might do you a favor.

Also: why were you going to wait until the first day back to spring on your boss that you want a part-time schedule? Things like that should be worked out before you go on leave. I wouldn't blame him/her one bit for telling you no, because I know I would think you were making excuses, even if you're really not.

Ditto calling around though.  Back up care is not going to be an option for you unless you can get your kids medical records before monday.

  • Post a backup/emergency care post on care.com now and see if you can find someone.
  • Take monday off if you need to but try to find back up care as soon as possible.

As for the part time discussion, I think you shoudl go back full time until you're in the position to negotiate part time.

  • I would call everyone you know and post it to Facebook. I think it would look really really bad for you to miss your first day back. I would rather pay a premium to a drop in care center than call off

  • I was about to say do anything you can to arrange care so that you don't miss the first day, but I actually missed my first day back.  I was going back part-time, and my oldest wound up in the ER the night before with RSV.  My husband and I both had to stay home to take the two kids to the doc separately.

Anyway, I arranged that I would get my hours in, just not on Monday.  Is this an option for you (4 ten-hour days, just for the first week)?
