MFM Questions.

Morning ladies,

I have my first appointment with my MFM on the 15th at 20 weeks 1 day. I'm a little nervous because I'm not entirely sure what to expect outside of a long wait time (they are the only specialists in my area). Everytime I go to the OB they ask what questions I have and I feel silly because I don't have any.

Does anyone have any suggestions on questions I should ask at my appointment(s)?

Thanks!

  • I am no help.  Just wanted to let you know you're not alone, I'm the same way.  I'll be interested in seeing some of the responses you get.  GL at your appointment.

  • This helps some - we know that they are mono/di twins, and we had our anatomy scan at 17 weeks 1 day with my OB. Is it standard to do another one?

I guess this is sort of dumb, but I thought transvaginal u/s were only for early u/s.. we've had abdominal ones since 12 weeks..

You made a good point though, they'll tell me any important info that I need to know. Which I never really thought of before.

If you've already had the detailed anatomy scan, then no, you shouldn't need another one. It's just more typically done (I think) at 20 wks than at 17 wks and usually done at the MFM, especially w twins. that said, if you're in an area where you don't have easy access to MFM specialists, your OB may be more comfortable with handling slightly more complicated multiple pregnancies.

Transvaginal u/s is the best way to measure your cervix and cervical response to stress / pressure. They'll take the length measurement and then press on your abdomen low and high to see if there is any change. At least that's what they do at mine.

The only questions I've ever had for either of my doctors (regular OB and MFM) were with regard to standard protocols for twins. How do they feel abut vaginal births for twins? Are there conditions where a c-section is "automatic"? Do they induce and when? That sort of thing.
