Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How much formula should a 6 week old be drinking?

My LO is 6 weeks old and drinks (on average) 4 ounces every 3 hours. In the past 2 days he has occasionally taken 5 ounces because he stays hungry.

He was born with a head start at 10 lbs 5 oz, mind you. But is this a lot for a 6 week old?

He now weighs 12 lbs 11 oz.

  • Considering his weight, that much is probably normal. My LO just turned 2 months on Monday & that's how much she's eating. She weighs 12lbs 2.5oz (started out at 9lbs 5oz). If you're really concerned you could always call your pedi & ask. But it's really up to the baby.

  • Sounds very normal to me,my lo just turned 5 weeks and occassionally will drink a 6 oz bottle when the mood strikes him. Normally he eats about 3-4oz every 3 hours. He weighs 11.5 lbs.

  • My lo started drinking 6 oz every 3-3 1/2 hours at 4 weeks and is now 2 months. Not sure on her weight until our 2 month appointment next week, but she started at 8lbs 2oz. Hungry kiddo. She's still at that amount, but will sometimes take 8 oz if she's had a long nap or first bottle in the morning (She's sleeping 7-8 hours through the night). I'd say as long as they're not spitting it up much, let them have what they want. They'll let you know when they're full.
  • I was wondering the same about my LO. He is 4 weeks today and drinks 4-5 ounces every 2 1/2 hours. When I step on the scale with him he's about 10 lbs. I feel like he's a little piggy compared to how my daughter was. She only ate 2-3 oz until she was 3 months old.

  • the formula is for every pound your child has, they need 2 - 2.5 oz of formula a day to support their weight. when they have a growth spurt they will "ask" for more. So, if your child is over 12 lbs now, I would plan on giving your LO at least 24 - 30 oz total in a 24 hour period of time.
    And then there were three...
