ParaGard - TMI -

....after the birth of my daughter I decided that I needed a worry free birth control. Due to a lack of consecutive consumption, I failed the pill thing. So currently I'm sitting with ParaGard. Just wondering if there are any other moms using this and if so...

How did you feel about the hormone free method? I don't know how much longer I can handle the cramping, PMS, and ODD periods...I have about a week where I just feel out of it completely, cramping, and moody. Followed by two or three days of spotting, (not the normal kind, very dark, not heavy, but really odd colored I guess you could say?) on top of the emotional crud. Then the real fun begins, 3-4 days of basically having to wear training pads (similar to what you wear right after giving birth) no tampons have been able to help.

Is this normal for non-hormone bcs? I've only ever taken high hormone doses to control all of these symptoms based on my DRs recommendation, and now I feel helpless with my decision..

I have TWO choices, I can suck it up, or have it changed out, and having it changed means switching DRs because my insurance no longer covers the DR I have been going to, and I absolutely LOVE her.

:/ HELP.

If you think this belongs in another forum, please let me know!! Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on my down right awful situation!

Re: ParaGard - TMI -

  • I use Paragard.  I actually love it. I don't care for hormonal birth control so I really appreciate that there is something out there that works well for me.  The only side effect I've noticed is the super HEAVY bleeding, but oddly I have zero cramping and no other side effects.  But yeah, I have to wear the huge overnight pads for a few days and make sure I have spares on hand at all times.  Seems like my periods are shorter though. I prefer it immensely to the side effects of taking hormonal birth control.

I think that the emotional side effects you are experiencing isn't from the paragard.  It's just 'normal" for YOU when your periods are not influenced by hormones.

Another option for you may be to take something for your mood when you are on your period.  I actually know someone who does this.  Since having kids she has the biggest mood swings before her period and her Dr prescribed her something for that.   Again, she only takes it in the week before her period, not all the time.

  • Yes, I go through all of that too on Paragard. It really does suck, but the confidence I have in it is worth it.  I take some midol for the cramps and it works wonders for me.  It got better after a few months (lighter, less crampy).  Good luck!

  • I had Paragard before this pregnancy (took it out and was pregnant 2 weeks later!) and LOVED it. I didn't have what you are experiencing, however. Just normal periods once a month.

Maybe switching to Mirena would help alleviate a lot of your uncomfortable symptoms?

  • I had paraguard for 8 weeks last year before i had it taken out... my body hated it... cramping PAIN and bleeding.  My BF finally told me to have it taken out cuz I was in so much pain, we went BC free for a year after that

Dr said that it could have been sitting wrong or my uterus just didn't like it....

  • I have the ParaGard and LOVE IT. I started with the Mirena after I had my son and oh boy. I would not recommend it. I bled for 3 months after having it put in and then I gained a crap load of weight. I had it removed and the ParaGard put in and its been way better. I appreciate not having any additional hormonal source in my body! HAHA I'm wacked out enough as it!!
  • I haven't had a child yet but I have had the Paragard IUD for the past 4 years. The first 6mos are a little iffy because your body is trying to get into it's own cycle. I came off the pill and onto the IUD. So my body didn't like it at first. I would stay with the Paragard and see if your hormones level out. Good luck!
