Cloth Diapering

Stripping with a front-loader

So I recently moved and bought a front load washer. I use Tide and never had an issue with stink with my top loader, but now my diapers stink like pee. I've used more detergent, less detergent and nothing helps. They come clean (no stains) but definitely a lingering stink. I am just VERY VERY nervous about putting something other than detergent into my new beautiful front loader. So I'd like some tips on stripping with a front loader (how much? does the Dawn go into the top detergent compartment? does it void the washer warranty?) Help, please!! Thanks :)

Re: Stripping with a front-loader

  • We live in Europe so all we have are front loaders. I use dishwasher tablets to strip my diapers. I get the store brand ones that aren't all in one. I put one tablet crumbled up into the draw and run a normal diaper program then I do a few extra rinses.

If they smell like pee when coming out of the dryer, for your initial rinse, use a regular wash cycle instead of just a rinse.  You can also add a few VERY soaked bathtowels in the load to trick the machine into using more water.  On my Whirlpool duet I used quickwash with an extra rinse but now that she's a toddler with stronger pee, I use a normal wash cycle with an extra rinse no detergent - then I do my regular wash cycle heavy duty with extra rinse.  I also rinse with warm water, I've had better results with that.

If the smell occurs after she pees and is ammonia like, you need to strip.  I recommend RLR for a front loader.
