Working Moms

Poll: which would you choose

I'm just curious....

Here's our current situation. My SIL has watched our two boys in our home for awhile now but she's going to be taking on a full time position as a nurse so we are arranging child care for the fall. DH owns his own business and normally does not work until about noon. He normally works in the evenings. He'd like to have his mornings with the boys. For almost the same cost, the boys can go to a daycare or have a nanny that comes to our house from 1-5:30pm when I arrive home.

The pros to daycare are the boys get social interaction, participate in organized activities, and we'd pay for full days do the boys could go early if DH had an early meeting, etc.

The pros to the nanny are the boys could have their naps at home (both need long naps), the nanny could do light housework and we would not miss work days if the boys were sick. DH would likely do a lot of activities with the boys in the mornings (like play groups).

Im leaning towards daycare and DH is leaning towards the nanny, so I'm curious, based on this short description, which would you choose?

  • My vote is for nanny for several reasons. The nanny will be able to do some light housework, this would be great!

The nanny will expose your kids to less illness. If DH is really going to take them to playgroups then they will have social interaction then.

I would definately go with the nanny!

  • When you say long naps, how long do you mean?  Like 3 hours?  Taking the kids to a center mid-day would mean lunch, nap, then two hours of play time tops.  They're not going to get a whole lot of social interaction time.  I thought I would be leaning toward a center, but the timing makes me wonder if the convenience of a nanny (no drop-offs or scrambling to cover care for a sick kid) would be better.

  • I would pick the daycare and I would have them attend some/not all mornings.  Starting at 1pm might be odd because many centers have rest time between 1-3.  The center gives you more flexibility.

I voted " nanny", but I am going to give you a different spin. Could DS#1 go to a K4 in a year, which is normally half days? If so, then that could get him the socialization you're looking for.  Just a thought.

  • I vote for the center. The social interaction is invaluable. I don't think the same can quite be acheived at a play group.

Don't let exposure to germs be a deterant. They're going to encounter that eventually, better to build up their immunities now. (Not to mention, they'd be exposed at said play group anyway.)

Plus, what do you plan on doing when the nanny is sick or wants to go on vacation...? Daycare won't leave you scrambling at 6am to find back up care.
