carpeted dining room

We are buying a house that has carpet in the dining room. New, tan carpet at that. There is no room to eat in the kitchen, sot he dining room is really our only option. I'm looking for ideas for how to protect it.

we put a cheap ikea rug underneath the table part & then for her high chair we put one of those plastic mats.

You can buy a plastic splash mat at BRU for about $10. It's made of plastic so spills are easy to clean. Smelled a little plast-y for a day or two but the smell went away fast.

When DS was little we had the same problem so I bought a cheap clear table cloth from the Dollar Tree and never worried about the carpet afterwards.
