Definitely. She understands what we mean when we say it (we've been working on it for a long time because we have a gas fireplace we didn't want her going near). She also knows that if she shakes her head, it means she doesn't want (to do) something.
Understanding and obeying at this stage are two different things. DD understands "no" but does not necessarily obey when she is told "no."
Same here.

She follows through a little more than half the time I would say. It depends on how much fun she's having with the forbidden. She's actually quite good about repeating NoNo back, shaking her head and walking away from whatever.

Dylan is the exact same. He knows what "no" means but doesn't like to obey. He'll slowly touch something that I've told him not to touch while looking at me. Frustrating! lol

This is exactly what Xander does. And then there are other things, like the cup throwing. When he throws his cup on the floor, he then looks at me and shakes his head because he knows that I'm going to tell him not to do it, even though he already did it. I feel like we have a lot of kinks to work out of this system...
Absolutely. She uses it as often as I do by shaking her head.... she loves to use it... She hates it when I do.

Yep, and she knows the tones too. A soft no = she shakes her head too but does it anyway. A firm tone and she shakes her head and stops. A really firm tone (like she's in danger or hitting) and she immediately sits down and cries.

Me three!! My son is always trying to get aways with anything and when we say "no" he either looks at us and turns back around to do it or ignores us. I think its only been once that he stopped after I told him "no" but I think when he turned around something else distracted him and he went for his toys instead
I don't think so. But, we also don't say "no" a lot. Instead, we'll focus on the action we want her to take.
Example: instead of saying "no don't throw your cup on the ground", we'll say "keep your cup on the tray"
I imagine if she was doing something that was dangerous, the tone of voice would be more effective than the word. Like yesterday, I had the oven door open to get muffins out, and it was hot. She crawled over to the oven. I yelled "stop!" she was very surprised and halted immediately. I'm sure I could have said "dog!" or any other word, and she would have reacted the same way.

Yep, this. She understands for sure. She gives us a devilish little smirk and then does whatever we asked her not to do again.

I'm so glad I asked this question. It makes me feel so much better knowing that your LO's know it but could care less about it too. lol.
I guess Dylan is just stubborn like his mommy

Ditto. Sometimes she will listen and stop doing it but that's like 2% of the time we say no.
