Random Birthday Shirt Dilema

So every year I've had a birthday shirt made for my daughter on Etsy, different sellers but all cute.  This year, DD wants a "Ladybug Girl" birthday shirt after a book series called "Ladybug girl" and her birthday is around this specific book: https://www.amazon.com/Ladybug-Girl-Beach-Jacky-Davis/dp/0803734166

So I go on Etsy, google etc and there are none and no one will make me one b/c it's copyrighted, ugh I wish I had known before I committed to this theme. :(  I found some really ugly upersonalized ones on cafepress but I can't seem to be able to pull the trigger on it b/c they are ugly and have bumblebee boy on them (another character from the book) which she can careless about.

Some people have mentioned to me to make my own and to iron on a transfer but that will wash off and I know she will cry.  Anyone have any ideas for me?  Know of iron on's that won't wash off?  I am not good at sewing, so I can not sew or embroider her one myself?  I want to be good and legal but I Sooo wish they made shirts or sold their copyrights like Dora :(

  • What do you want it to look like?  I sew but do not think I am capable of what you are looking for.  (and for anyone thinking it, I am not a pro and do not have a store but am just trying to see if I can help.). And why would a transfer wash away.

Well originally I wanted the little girl in her bathing suit running with her dog next to her embroidered on the shirt.  Similar to something like this style where the fabric is under the embroidery https://www.etsy.com/listing/104250896/girls-dora-the-exlporer-onsie-shirt-or?ref=sr_gallery_13&ga_search_query=dora+shirt&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_search_type=all but instead of Dora it being ladybug girl.  Maybe a wave under her toes?  not sure exactly.  I thought there would be tons to chose from since the book series is crazy popular but it's not available.

Problem is I don't know anyone that can do embroidery, especially without a pre-made pattern.  As far as why the transfer would wash away.  When I made one for my daughter's first birthday I ironed it on and then she wore it once, I threw it in the wash and the iron on transfer fell off.  I tried again to iron another one on and that one also fell off during the first wash.  I bought a different brand and the same thing happened.  I guess they aren't washable?  After all that time and money was wasted I wound up ordering her an embroidered one on Etsy but this year I can't.

  • That book is my daughter's favorite as well. Cute idea for a theme. I just came across this shirt and had thought to myself that it reminded me of the style of illustrations from the books. I know it is not the same but the style is close and it could perhaps be used as inspiration for a Etsy vendor.

If the link doesn't work it the girls seaside stroll shirt in the kids section of J Crew and it is on sale.

  • How about sewing on the iron transfer?  You do no need o embroider it, you can use a small zig-zag or more decorative stitch.

If you're okay with a light colored shirt, you could probably trace her with fabric markers and paint her with watered down fabric paints- practice on a cheap piece of jersey first, or even do it on another piece of fabric and applique it onto the tee.

There are very, very good inkjet transfers around these days, too- not the stuff you'll find in the brick and mortar stores, though. The "super soft" IJTP here is fabulous.

It's honestly refreshing to hear that you're having trouble finding someone on Etsy to work with you (LOL- I am sorry for your frustration, though!). Ethics tend to not be very big in Etsy-land, and copyrights and trademarks are largely ignored. :-p

Thank you so much for you response and everyone else too!  I can not paint and I can not sew!  I will order these professional iron on transfers though!!  Thank You!! :)
