Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My 3.5 month old is up every 1.5 hours. I'm so tired.

Before you say it's a growth spurt or the 4 month wakeful, I should clarify that it's ALWAYS been this way.  I can't get him to stretch his sleep out.  He also only ever naps 30 min. at a time.  I'm dying here.  I'm so tired I feel physically sick.

He won't take a paci- I have tried every single one on the market.  He gags and screams at me.

His issue, I believe, is that he totally correlates the bottle to sleep.  He can't fall back to sleep without a bottle in his mouth.  Often he doesn't even suck more than a couple of times and he's out.  I don't know how to break this habit.

Thoughts?  I'm so tired and cranky, I just don't know what to do.

  • So I just tried taking the bottle away as he was falling asleep but not quite asleep and he took the whole bottle and then was wide awake.   He was up from 6:45am to 9:20am and then I could tell he was just going to pass out no matter what, so I put him in his RNP, put the bottle in his mouth until his eyes got heavy (maybe 45 seconds), then kept giving him a paci.  He'd spit it out, and I'd put it right back in.  After about 2 min. he gave up and just fell asleep.

I don't want it to always be this way but if I can at least break the bottle/sleep association, then we'll be on our way.

  • From what I've heard, babies don't typically sleep for very long.

A very long time ago I began co-sleeping because the whole waking every hour just wasn't working for me. I've put my expectation of STTN on pause for a couple of months.

  • Have you tried putting rice cereal or baby oatmeal in his bottle when you feed him at night to maybe give him some extra calories?

  • Have you tried having him sleep in different places at night?  Options are crib in his own room (some babies sleep better by themselves), PNP in your room, RNP, swing, to see if he just doesn't like where he is currently sleeping?

Also lots of white noise and a dark room might help him transition between sleep cycles.

Also, while you try to figure it out do you have a DH or family member that can do a night shift so you can get some rest?

  • He either sleeps in his crib or RNP until about 3am, then I co-sleep because his waking gets fo frequent it's just easier.  He sleeps with a noise machine and blackout blinds and we live out in the country so there's no noise from outside anyways.

He's not really hungry- he often just takes a few sips and is asleep.  It's an association issue.

Today for naps, I have let him have a bottle, but not to the point of falling asleep.  He has complained but finally gives up and either takes a paci for like 5 seconds or just passes out.  I stand there and shush him, pat him and comfort him.  He hasn't really "cried" just more complained.  He's out right now after only about 45 seconds of kvetching.

  • I'm wondering about silent reflux... My DD has it, and she sleeps A LOT better.  Have you tried talking to his Pedi about his sleeping issues?

  • Don't have any suggestions because I am in the same boat. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone. He's a really good baby- hardly ever cries but he's just NOT a fan of sleep. Like, at all.

  • K did the exact same thing she was up every 1.5 hrs for 20 minute and up for day around 4ish. I was loosing it. I got the baby whisphere and followed it exactly-after one week she started sleeping through the night. The routine helped and the fact I wouldnt let her "snack"-instead she now eats a full bottle on schedule to sustain till next feeding. K used to also only fall asleep while eating, but now we eat right when she wakes up vs opposite. This book was a life savior for me

Now we are having issues with her naps, but I think its because she is confused btw crib and swing, so we are now breaking her from swing.
