Food Allergy

Soy milk dangerous?

Ok, I am really new to the whole food allergy thing. DD2 was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with a milk allergy, and thank goodness it is her only allergy. I have the ok to start soy milk whenever I am ready. She still BF's about 4 times a day but my supply is not what it used to be and I think it is more comfort nursing than nursing for nutrition at this point.....so enough background.

My mom was talking to a co-worker who said soy milk is dangerous and has been shown to cause tumors in girls. Obviously this concerns me, especially since my only other option would be elecare, as rice milk and coconut milk do not have enough protein.

Have any of you heard of this? Is there a specific type of soy milk that is safer than others? Any and all help and comments are greatly appreciated!

Re: Soy milk dangerous?

  • I personally would not regularly give soy milk to my kids (or drink it myself). It mimics estrogen and can cause problems. DD1 is allergic to dairy and soy, she drinks enriched rice milk (and water, and occasionally watered down juice). I add pea protein powder to her rice milk sometimes. I just make sure to also feed her lots of avocado and I cook with olive oil a lot to give her the healthy fats she needs. She also gets Target Up&Up brand multivitamins a couple times a week that are dairy, soy, nut, egg, and wheat free. (They look like gummy bears).

DD1 also loves beans and meat, so she gets plenty of protein and iron there. You can always talk to a dietitian if you need ideas of what to feed LO to be sure she's getting the nutrients she needs. You could also try almond milk, if you wanted. All of the non-dairy milk options have their own pro's and con's as far as fat/vitamin/protein content.

  • Actually don't think I'll have a problem since she hates soy milk. She will eat anything I give her, but today and yesterday I tried soy milk in her bottle, after one drink she threw the bottle on the floor and won't touch it. Guess we're on to rice and almond milk.

  • You could try mixing some breastmilk in with whatever milk you want to switch her to, to make it a more gradual change.

  • i've heard that about soy milk & don't feel comfortable giving it to my DD. However, her allergist said that is crap & that he gave his own daughter soy milk until she was 2. My pedi also said it's not true so who knows.
  •  We are currently using hemp milk and DS likes it.

  • We are 2.5 years into this, and my recommendation is either coconut or hemp.  Good luck!!

  • Hemp, almond, & coconut were the alterna-milks that were rec'd to us by Ari's nutritionist as good alternatives. Coconut milk is not very high in protein, but we made up for it with other foods & it is very high in good fats, which is important at this age. Ari has a tree nut allergy & could not tolerate the hemp milk or coconut milk either, so we ended up with no replacements. It's doable w/o a replacement milk or elemental formula, but you should work with a nutritionist who is knowledgeable about FAs.

Ari can tolerate coconut milk now but just doesn't like drinking milk much. We do coconut milk yogurt instead & he loves it.

  • Well, I have a son and I actually thought people were more anxious about that!  We're 9 months in on soy and I have no fears about it.  I mean seriously, I could sit there and worry about what *might* happen b/c I gave my son soymilk for a couple years or I could follow his pedi's recommendation and give him the soy, feed him a healthy diet, get him lots of exercise and enjoy my child.  We choose the second option.

FWIW, we mixed BM and soy for a couple weeks and transitioned slowly to the soy.
