Hypoglycemia?

Any other ladies struggling with hypoglycemia?  I have low bp and hypoglycemia issues normally and both have gotten a lot worse during this pregnancy, leading to one sick mama on my end.  Yesterday I actually had to pull off the road because it was so bad - very scary.  For those of you who struggle with low blood sugar, are there any snacks or foods you keep on hand to help?  I'm experimenting with different ones and have had mixed luck.  I have a call in to my doctor pending but am wondering if anyone else has experience with managing it.

Re: Hypoglycemia?

  • I have been dealing with it as well. I met with a dietician a few weeks back and it was helpful. We worked out a meal plan with my carbs blocked out for meals and snacks. So far this time I have not had too much trouble with this pregnancy. With my last pregnancy I kept those cheddar crackers with peanut butter on hand for my first pregnancy and those helped if I had not eaten within an hour or two. (I kept them by my bedside as well)  This time I am just grabbing spoonfuls of peanut butter as needed. Talk with your doctor and see about meeting with a dietician. I gained a lot more weight with my first one that I would like to gain with this one, so hopefully they can help you out!! Good luck!!

  • I have always had low blood pressure and now with this pregnancy hypoglycemia.  On my one hour glucose test, I scored a 52.  They are looking for a 95 to 130/135 typically.  I know if I eat a lot of sugar, my sugar will drop rapidly after.  If I have a drop, something sugary (like OJ) will pull it up again, but then I have to follow up with some protein and/or complex carb or else I will crash again.  I get hot and sweaty and dizzy when this happens.  I have had to pull over before too, which is particularly terrifying when it was just my 3 year old and I!  Hang in there, try to eat every few hours, carry snacks, stay hydrated!

  • I've never been diagnosed, but I'm almost positive that I'm hypoglycemic. I always carry peanut butter crackers and granola bars with me at all times. I have noticed it to be worse during pregnancy.

  • Thank you!  Although it's terrible feeling this way, it's nice to know I'm not the only one.  I didn't realize that I should follow a quick sugar boost with a protein.  I'm going to throw that into the rotation and see how that works.  A dietician is a great idea, too.

  • I have had a problem with low blood sugar before pregnancy but it is way worse now. I snack on dried cranberries and peanutbutter crackers. Helps for me.
  • I have been dealing with hypoglycemia for years now and have learned to always keep snacks with me.  Peanut butter crackers are what I usually carry.  I have them stashed in my purse, my car and in my desk at work.  Before I was pregnant I would drink half a coke as a quick fix if I didn't have any snacks with me and eating a meal wasn't in the near future.  I have cut out all caffeine now so I rely on fitting protein into every meal and keeping snacks with me at all times.
