Baby scratching his face :(

My LO is infatuated with his hands. For awhile he would just look at them and try to put them in his mouth. Now he's started rubbing them against his face around his eyes and nose.

A couple of days ago he scratched his nose. I wasn't concerned because it looked like it was healing. But this morning it was bleeding again. He must have re-scratched it. :(

I put gloves on him but I feel bad because he loves his hands. I don't want to hinder him but I don't want him to hurt himself more..

I clipped his nails but maybe I should file them too? Anyone else's LO doing this?

  • Yes, but he goes through phases where he does it for a few days then stops.  i hated putting socks on his hands but it seemed to help.  I wonder why they do this?  Is it some kind of soothing thing? Nighttime terrors?

Mine has been doing this since day 1.  At night she wears the gowns that you can fold over their hands.  But, the thing I found that works best is to file her nails.  I haven't clipped them yet because I am scared, but I file them every couple of days.  It works if I stay on top of it.

  • She's only scratched herself a couple of times but holy cow her nails grow so quickly! I file, clip, and bite her nails all the time! Yes- my mom yells at me for biting them but whatever works, right???

  • My LO is definitely obsessed with his hands. I put mittens on him for the first few weeks because of this. I now cut his nails with piyo piyo scissors and then file them with the Zoli B electric file. I got both on amazon and I have no more issues. The file is amazing....Its so soft and doesnt hurt LO but it totally softens the edges of his nails.  I do this every few days when he's sleeping...
  • Looks like I'm going to have to start filing his nails. The mittens didn't last long today. He hated them and I felt bad so I took them off. :P

He is just obsessed with his hands! Wonder what will happen when he discovers his feet. :)

  • Baby James is doing this, but it looks like he's inherited eczema from me, he's got patches on his cheeks and eyebrows I'm trying to keep treated :(  I try to keep his nails filed and cut, but they grow so fast!

    Aw poor baby. :(

I agree, it's so hard to keep up with clipping my son's nails. Today he scratched me and it looks like I got mauled by a cat. lol

do you have any of the sleepers that have the mitten built in? We love those, but LO is starting to outgrow the newborn sleepers and we can't find any 0-3 ones that have the mitten.
