Choosing a C-Section?

What is everyone's thoughts on this? My OB seemed open to allowing me to schedule a c-section when that time comes and I'm totally on board with that (unless for some reason I am strongly suggested not to) I just wonder what everyone elses opinions are or what they did or plan on doing.

Re: Choosing a C-Section?

  • My OB has twins, and when we asked what we should do, he said it was our decision to make. We asked what he did, personallly, and he said that his twins were both vertex but they did a c-section anyway because in his opinion, it was safer. That was good enough for us, so we scheduled one for 38 weeks. When they couldn't get my cntx to stop at 35 weeks, we had an emergency c-section.

I almost backed out because I got scared at the last minute, but I'm so grateful I didn't. When the boys were born, C (baby A) had the cord wrapped around his neck, and they told us that it was a complication that could've killed both babies. I'm so, SO grateful I didn't chicken out at the last second and did the c-section. Who knows how differently things would have played out if I'd tried to deliver them..

If we ever have more kids, I will def try for VBAC. I want to know what it's like to actually delivery a baby, KWIM?

ETA - C-section being safer was my OB's personal opinion.

  • We were given the choice even though baby A is breech, which surprised me. I originally really wanted a vaginal birth but with research found that a breech baby is not ideal for vaginal birth. My OB has twins herself and after I told her that we wanted to do what was safest for the babies and that we thought a c-section was in order she smiled and agreed. I think she was giving us the choice more to help us feel a part of the process but would have likely really pushed for a C/S if we had chosen vaginal. Regardless, I think that all situations are different. What positions are your babies in right now? I think that's one of the biggest factors to consider.

  • My OB left it up to me, and after a lot of thought I chose a csection. It was great. Surgery was no biggie and my recovery has been a breeze.

  • I wanted a section with my singleton, was guilted out of it by random people and ended up with a section with her anyway.  After getting no drugs until I was almost 9 cm, I was in hell.  Looking back I wish I would have gone with my gut feeling-an elective section.

I had a scheduled repeat section with the babies and it was marvelous.  Once in a blue moon you will get a few people who have actually had sections complain about them.  You'll get one or two here, I'm sure.

Go with your gut on this and don't feel a bit guilty about it!

  • Both my OB practice and MFM are uncomfortable doing vaginal deliveries with twins. My OB practice will not induce a twin pregnancy, but they would have considered vaginal delivery if both babies are vertex and I go into labor on my own. However, they have made it clear that they are concerned about the risk to Baby B. I don't want to push my medical team to do something they are uncomfortable with and due to my previa, it is a non issue anyway. No one wants major surgery, but in our case, it really is the safest option. I have already scheduled my c-section.

  • I think it depends in how comfortable your OB is with delivering twins vaginally. It seems that Drs who aren't as comfortable with it will usually recommend c-section no matter the position of the babies. All of the OBs at my practice are well practiced in breech extractions so they all recommended vaginal delivery for me. They gave me the option of choosing a c-section, though. My OB has twins and she attempted vaginal delivery herself, and she said she'd do it again. ETA: I was very close to choosing a c-section because I was more afraid of a vaginal delivery. I ended up delivering both vaginally and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. My recovery has been so easy. I've only taken 1 Norco since I got home 8 days ago. I was able to drive right away, which is great since I'm back and forth to the NICU daily. It's not bad at all.

  • My OB is a twin mom and had a c-section herself. She appears to be pro-cs for twins. However, she did say that if both were head down that she would definitely support me in a vaginal delivery. She flat out said she really didn't like to do breech extractions but that she would if that is what I wanted.

My 38 week c-section has been scheduled since 14 weeks though. She wanted to go ahead and get it on the books. As she pointed out, we can always cancel it.
