Advice Please - weak BFP

Hi Ladies,

This is futuremom2b for those who recognize my name.  I had to set up a new account bc I got locked out of my old one...

In any case, long story short, i got a bfp a few days ago.  I have a history of mc's (1 d&c, 1 natural m/c and 1 ectopic).  I went for early blood testing and my results, in my opinion, are not hopeful.

Beta 1 - 28
Beta 2 - 42

It didn't double but did increase by about 66% which is like the mimimal acceptable amount.

In any case, I got left with, ok, call us if you bleed or cramp, otherwise, we'll see you at week 8.  Um, is that acceptable with my history??  They've never just let me go like this with my other m/cs (with the exception of the first since we had no idea, and it was a missed m/c at my first visit w/them).

What would you do?  I left a vm with my OB who's out of the office the next few days bc I'm hoping she'll want additional b/w.  Would you push or wait?  Or see a new practice?  Thanks!

Re: Advice Please - weak BFP

  • I would wait. As difficult as it is to hear, even if you do mc tomorrow or in two months, there isn't anything they can do to stop it or help you. It's common practice in my area to be seen for your first appointment at 8 weeks. They typically wait til then because there should def be a heartbeat by then, and they can do an US to confirm viability and placement in the uterus without causing the unnecessary stress that would come from not seeing a HB on a scan at 5-6 weeks.

  • And, I guess the reason I'm upset is b/c with one prior e/p, don't they want to make sure THAT doesn't happen again and to catch it early if it is? It can be quite dangerous...
  • It can be dangerous if it isn't found before the pregnancy becomes large enough to rupture the fallopian tube. If they find it at 8 weeks, it should still be early enough to be taken care of before any damage is done. If it would make you more comfortable, I would def call and ask again, but from the medical aspect, 6-8 weeks is the standard of care for a first OB appointment.

  • I understand the desire to be seen, but aside from reassurance what else can they do for you?  If you m/c between now and then, there would be nothing they can do to stop it anyways.  When you talked to the office staff or nurse, did you mention the ectopic?

What do you hope to gain from changing doctors?  The new office likely won't see you earlier than 8 weeks, either.

  • Not necessarily true... with my e/p, my levels were rising high (just not doubling appropriately) and it was caught before my 8 week appt.  Had I waited that long, the embryo could have done some major damage.  The odds of having another e/p after having one increases, which is the reason behind my concern. I don't expect the doctors to be able to stop a m/c or e/p, but I just wonder if it's standard procedure to a patient with a recurring loss history including e/p to just wait it out.

I had my twins through that practice and really have positive things to say about the doctors there, but this "you're number are ok, see ya later" mentally doesn't seem appropriate when in fact the numbers are weak.  Maybe I'm just sensitive, I don't know.

  • I would push it.  Ectopic pregnancy is nothing to play around with.  Good luck!

  • I mean no offense when I say this, but clearly you don't want advice. You want us to tell you it's ok to push it with your doctor's office. You've had a counter argument for anyone who's said anything other than that.

So call them back, remind them about your previous ectopic and ask to be seen sooner.

This. I'd want to be seen before 8w.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • I would try to get in at 6 weeks. You should not only be able to confirm that your baby is in the right spot but you should also hear a heartbeat.

  • Thanks ladies for responding.  I just didn't want to seem overbearing, but the possibility of another e/p freaks me out.  So, I will call and ask for closer monitoring...  Again, as a PP mentioned, this isn't bc I think a m/c can be saved, but I would like to save my tubes if this turns out to be an e/p. Thanks!
