Cord Blood- bank or donate?

We're looking into the cord blood donation v banking, and since you ladies are usually more enlightened than me, I wanted to hear your opinions on cord blood donation versus banking. Pros versus cons? Which would you choose? Why?

I chose delayed cord clamping and put that blood in my baby. Usually, it's not possible to harvest enough cord blood to do anything else if you delay clamping.

If I was choosing between bank and donate, I'd pick donate. I truly think banking is a scam.

And I've never heard of donating placentas for search and rescue dogs, but if I wasn't going to encapsulate mine I'd totally do that. Very cool.

Definitely donate because to bank the blood costs to much.

Yeah, I'm in the scam camp too. The amount of marketing that's done is just unsettling -- and disproportionate to the number of uses for cord blood cells that exist in this day and age (maybe that will change, but for now the reality is that the value is extremely limited.) I would donate or simply discard.

As one who has known folks who could have benefited from banking, I don't see it as a total scam. The problem is, it's just so darn expensive. I know in some states (like mine) there is talk of finding ways to make it more affordable/reachable for families. The other issue is that it's kind of like insurance... you have to pay for it whether you ever need it or not. And I keep thinking, "The year I stop paying for it is the year I'll probably need it!" It's just hard to gauge how worth it is given the price. Donating sounds like a good route if you don't have a known family history of diseases that could benefit.

We donated with #1...problem is, it's not available everywhere and only at certain hospitals as far as I know. The second time we did delayed clamping

We donated to a public bank where my daughter will automatically benefit from it if she ends up needing it before someone else ends up needing it. This time we have chosen delayed cord clamping (which I never heard of when pregnant with DD).

I would have donated it if it was an option at our hospital. I wasn't going to pay for the storage and it was a good thing. DS's cord has stopped pulsing before he was out. He was otherwise healthy. Banking would have been a waste for us.

We're doing delayed cord clamping, so neither is an option. Otherwise, I would donate. The private banking really does seem like a scam.

I'm interested in the placenta donation thing. Can the poster who mentioned that put up a link or something? I did a quick google search, and the only thing I found so far was one that only seemed to accept them if you had a c-section (which I very much hope not to do).

Generally. If you put the blood in the baby, it isn't sitting in the umbilical cord.

I figure nature intended it to go in the baby, so I want it in my baby.

I understood that you could still donate or bank even if you delayed cord clamping. Even the residual blood left in the cord could provide the stem cells needed. Although I'm interested in the article posted about all this being a scam anyways.

Thanks, ladies. I'm definitely out of the banking camp. I didn't know you couldn't donate if you delayed. I know my birthing center has donation, and I'll ask them directly if they can donate if I delay clamping.
