Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 months old and not really reaching/grabbing

DD will grab a blanket on her tummy and she will grab at links or this light weight ball with holes in it. She will also bat at things when they are hanging above her. However, she is not intentionally grabbing for things. She will not grab at a toy very often and I am thinking its because we really don't have any toys.  We have a fisher price gym that she lays under and bats at but she can't  actually grab the things and hold them.. transfer them from hand to hand.. practice bringing them to her mouth.. etc.  Does your 4 month old hold things yet? reach toward things? Also, what toys have you found to be ones that your LO will grab, push, reach towards, pull towards themselves, crinkle, etc.  I want to get some toys like balls, cars or other things that will encourage reaching.  Thanks!

Re: 4 months old and not really reaching/grabbing

  • DS is 4.5 months and probably started doing this within the last month. I think if you give her toys to try to grab/hold onto, she'll start doing it before you know it.  These soft blocks are my son's favorite! He can hold them in both hands and they go straight to his mouth. Two of them jingle and two of them crinkle.  They are great!

  • My son will be four months next week, he does grab and try to put things in his much but he still keeps his thumb tucked in which drives me crazy b/c it makes it hard for him to hold things.  He loves this duck that when you pull the feet down it automatically goes up once released - https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4282488.

So just curious, can he actually pull the duck down? We have something like that on her car seat (it's a monkey) and she can not pull it down. She just hits it.

  • If your LO is batting at things and flailing arms but not reaching for things that aren't immediately next to her, then it's a sign that she just hasn't quite figured out that arms exist to move hands closer to the object that she wants.  Ours is turning 5 months this week and in the past month really just learned a lot about grabbing things and putting them in her mouth. I can tell that she's really close to figuring out about reaching, but she's just not quite there yet.

Babies don't need a ton of different toys, but just a few specific toys that teach them certain things.  You're specifically looking to emphasize cause and effect at this stage, along with introducing different textures, colors, temperatures (like freezer toys for teething), and sounds.

    We're all pretty fond of:

https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=15241292& She sticks the end balls in her mouth, and there are a million different places for her to grab onto.  She can lift it with either one hand or two, and there are two different textures to go with all of the different colors.  Plus, it rattles when shaken.  All in all, I love this toy (and so does our LO.)

  • My LO has been doing this for about  a month now, it was all of a sudden. He really likes this toy from BRU that has feet that are big and hang. He likes pulling it down and putting it in his mouth

  • It will happen soon. Just keep having play time with her tos. My LO started doing a lot during the 4th month. Give it some time.

  • My LO wasn't either so I talked to my pedi who said she had no concerns. She said he can see and he tracks me like crazy. He's just a calm and laid back LO and I'm sure it's the same with your babe.

  • He does grab the duck but that has come recently, she will get there.  I was worried at first too because I read something that said at 3 months they should start grabbing things and he wasn't.  As long as you keep those items in front of her, she will get it eventually.

  • Thanks guys! I picked up some toys today (those blocks, that toy with the balls on it, some balls she can grab, a book with crinkle pages, and a dangly animal she can grab)... She seems to love them so far so thanks for the suggestions!

  • My four month old doesn't reach and grab things either. He chews on hid hands a lot and will put a blanket or burp rag in his mouth but if I hold a toy in front of him he just looks at it for a minute and puts hid hands back in his mouth. I was worried too but my pedi said it's totally fine and he looks like he is right on track.
