Straw Sippys

Anyone else starting to make the transition from bottles to sippys??  DS won't hold his bottle or a regular sippy cup because he doesn't quite understand the concept of tilting his head back; however I bought some of the straw sippys (the kind that are relatively spill-proof) and he goes to town on those!

I started out giving him a little water in it when the pedi said it was okay a couple of months ago.  Yesterday I decided to give him his 'bottle' in it since my mom and I were out and about shopping....he drank the whole thing!

I'm not sure I'm ready to give up our time together when he takes his bottle, but it was really nice not having to stop what I was doing so he could have his milk.  Besides the fact trying to give him his bottle in a crowded place is nearly impossible with him craning his neck to see what's going on everywhere!

Re: Straw Sippys

  • That's awesome that he takes them.  That's all LO took at first.  He takes both now but like you said, he had to learn the concept of tilting his head back.  I haven't tried giving him his bottle in the sippy, I might try that just to see how he does.  Thanks.

I think the ones I bought said 9 mo and I let DS use them starting about 6&1/2 so I'd say go far it!

  • That's awesome! I have been meaning to buy some because a lot of moms have told me their little one started drinking out of a straw sippy before they understood to turn up their normal ones. I keep forgetting when I go the store but I am going to try to remember to get some today because I am interested to see what E will do. It would be nice if he would drink his bottle out of them when we are out and about.

  • Lucas uses a straw sippy but only with water. He loves it. Our pedi said to go straight to straw because it's better for speech development?  Who knows. He loves it. We use the Tommy tippee ones for 12+

  • I tried the straw cup and it was a no-go, however that was a few months ago so maybe I'll try again. She does do fine though with the regular sippy, she has the Nuk and the Tommy Tippee for 7+ months and she does good with those. She also holds her bottles now and sits on her own for all of her feedings, so maybe after 9 months we will try to start transitioning to sippy only.

  • All of these positive posts..maybe we will try a straw cup again. We tried a while back and when she managed to get the straw in her mouth she made gagging faces. Then the dog stole it off the table and chewed up the straw so that was the end of that.

This exactly.  You either have to transition to the straws or straight cups so why not skip one step if possible.
