Parenting after a Loss

Baby hates "tummy time"?

DD will just screem every time I try to put her on her tummy for tummy time. I get toys, Mirriors, I lay there with her and I always make sure she has been fed first! Any one have any ideas? I want her to build her strength, but tummy time is not working!

Re: Baby hates "tummy time"?

  • Don't worry -- while tummy time is advised from very early on, I think your LO is still so wee that she can't be expected to hang there for very long.  You can give her tummy time laying tummy to tummy with you, as well, which may be more comfortable and tolerable for her.  Good luck!

  • DD hated it the entire time she did it. We still did it here and there but I didn't push it.

This!  DS doesn't like tummy time if I put him on the floor, but if I lay him on my chest, he'll lift his head a ton just to look up at me!

  • Diddo, dd hated tummy time, so we did chest to chest. Her doctor always said she was developing fine. She just turned 4 months and is just now starting to tolerate it.

This.  The pedi told us that the only real downside to not doing it is delayed crawling.

I stayed down there with him until he could flip over himself.  I praised him and rubbed his back while he did it.  We worked up to 5 minutes and then worked up to 10, etc..  Even with all of this, many babies hate it.  DS hated it until I got him a tiny pillow (similar to the small Boppy) that goes under his chest.  He was able to easily hold his head up by then, but wasn't able to hold himself up on his arms for as long as he wanted.  The pillow allowed him to look at all of the things he wanted to look at and made it all more tolerable for him.

  • My kids hated it. I didn't force them. They are fine.

  • Lay down on the floor, or on the bed, or couch, and then put her on your stomach. Tummy time doesn't have to be done with her face in the carpet.

Also, try elevating her a bit. Drape her over a boppy or a rolled up towel.

Also, don't expect miracles. 10 seconds of tummy time this early is a success.

  • Thank you for all the responses! We have done the tummy to tummy and she likes that.  She is pretty strong and has been rolling her self from tummy to back since 3 weeks. I will try to pillow under her chest, because she loves to look around. and I'll have her lay on me more often!

Its good to hear my lo is not the only one who dislikes it!

  • Many would not condone the approach that we found worked well for us because it involved short bouts of tv, but we did tummy time with every diaper change; I laid him down bare-bottomed (naked time was his happiest time) on a water-proof changing pad cover in front of the tv.  It extended his tolerance of tummy time by a good two to three minutes.  He was captivated by the tv at that age.  He's 9 months old now and has virtually no interest in the tv, so I don't think I ruined him. :)

  • DS hated it too at first.

We would do it on our chest, or on the bed/couch by having him propped up on a cushion or pillow. We would also prop him up on the back of the couch so he could look outside. In the early weeks, it sometimes lasted 30 seconds and other times 3 minutes. I didn't want him to hate it, so I usually responded quickly when he would start to cry.

Once he got to be about 2-3m, I would prop him up on a pillow on my bed while I got dressed/put clothes away.

  • Pip hated it too.  We would play on the floor for a while on our backs, then I'd flip her over, lay on my tummy too and talk to her for a few minutes - she'd tolerate it for a few minutes but not long.  She's fine now - no long term damage done.

BTW - your daughter is adorable - love your siggy pic!!
