TTC After a Loss

Can I join you, ladies?

My husband and I went to our first ultrasound today at 10w4d. The doctor said there was an egg sac but no heartbeat, measuring at 6w4d.

We are beside ourselves with grief. I've had no indication whatsoever that anything was amiss. I'm scheduled for a D & C on Friday morning. I'm so scared, but many people have told me that it's very simple and I have little to be concerned about. Our doctor said we can start trying again in a few weeks, after I have 1 menstrual cycle.

I had a natural miscarriage 7 years ago at 8 weeks. I don't understand why I still feel pregnant with this missed miscarriage.

I have a history of heart palpitations so I'm really nervous about having anesthesia during the D & C. Have any of you been through this?

My husband is so upset right now, as am I, and I feel like I let him down. I've been taking prenatal vitamins since November, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't use drugs, I eat well, I exercise, and I get plenty of rest. I really don't understand what happened to the baby. I need support from beautiful ladies who have been through this. I'll miss all of the friends I made on the March 2013 board, but I'm happy to make new friends here.

Re: Can I join you, ladies?

  • sorry you're here :(

and I agree with your last statement..... I'm the same way. I guess it's just bum luck.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it's awful and such a shock when you had no clue anything might be wrong.

I don't have any experience with heart palpitations but I know they will keep a close eye on you during the procedure. Just make certain your OB knows this. I can attest to the D&Cs being really easy physically. I hope you find it's that way for you. (((hugs)))

  • I am so sorry you are going through this.

I just had a D&C last Thursday. Yes, it is a simple procedure, but it is still surgery. Just make sure your doctor and anesthesiologist know about your heart palpitations. Physical recovery has been easy. I have spotted every day since, but it hasn't been major. I was sore for a day or two, but if you take it easy you will be okay in that aspect.

As for mentally, please take time for yourself.

T&P going up for you and your DH!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you find the support you need from this board.

As far as your D&C, I do not have heart palpitations, but had no side effects from the anesthesia. MH got to be with me until I fell asleep, which made me less nervous. The procedure itself is relatively easy. It takes more of an emotional toll on you rather than physical. GL on Friday.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  Welcome to the board.

Repeat after me, "Nothing I did caused my miscarriage", because it's true.  Miscarriages are caused by alot of things, most of which you have absolutely no control over.  This was not anyone's fault.

I delivered, but had a follow-up D&C for retained tissue afterwards.  I was conscious for it. The D&C itself is relatively simple and strightforward.  It felt like a really long pap smear.  It's the emotional part that is what you have to worry about.  That's typically why they place many women under general anaesthetic.  If you can't go under general anaesthic, they will likely give you Fentinol (similar to Demerol) to help with the pain.

  • So sorry for your loss and welcome.  Like pp have said, try to be kind to yourself, there is most likely nothing you could have done differently to prevent your MC from happening.  As far as why you still "feel" pregnant, my OB told me that sometimes your body doesn't know right away that the baby isn't viable so it carries on as if you are still growing your LO...pretty cruel of your body to do!

Good luck w/your D&C...mine was physically pretty painless and I didn't bleed much after the 1st few days.  Everyone's experience is a little different. but most seem to feel the physical aspect of the procedure was easier than the emotions that come with it. I hope you find this board as helpful as I have!

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I had a very similar experience to yours and I can tell you that the D&C procedure itself is nothing to be worried about. Just make sure your Drs know about your existing condition. I had never had anesthesia before and was only nervous about that part of it, but honestly it was fine. When I woke up the first thing I said in recovery was 'wow, that was the best nap I ever had'. The emotional recovery is definitely worse than the physical, so just make sure to give yourself time. (((hugs))) I am sorry you have to be here, but I hope you find the ladies on this board as wonderful and supportive as I have.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Welcome to the board.

As a PP mentioned, I highly recommend the miscarriage/pregnancy loss board as well. That was such a wonderful place for me in the first weeks after my loss. You are also very welcome at this board too.

I do not have any D&C experience, but I have had anesthesia a few times. You will be closely monitored and taken care of. The surgery piece will be the easy part.

    Hugs to you.

I remember you from March 2013 and I'm sorry you have to be here.  The same thing happened to us two weeks ago- we went in for the u/s and there was no heartbeat, even though we saw it two weeks before that.  I had a D&E and while very emotional, it is not physically painful.  They did not put me all the way under and I did fine.

The grief can be very overwhelming.  The ladies here are extremely supportive and you will find lots of company here.

I remember you, too - I was so sad when you had to leave. I'm kinda happy to be sharing a different board with a familiar face.

  • I'm so sorry you are having to go through this.  I too continued to have pregnancy symptoms up until my d&c, a little over two weeks after our little one had gone.  The d&c was a relatively easy procedure to recover from.  The hardest part was the wait to get my Rhogam shot.

The women here are a wonderful source of support.  I'm hoping that your stay here will be short and sweet.

This exactly. I entirely understand your feelings about still feeling pregnant. With my first loss, it was a complete m/c. With the second, it was entirely different. No spotting, still had symptoms, etc. But it was a blighted ovum. I felt pregnant until after the D&C, which made it tough emotionally. Physically, it was an easy procedure. I am sorry you have to be here, but welcome (((hugs)))

  • Welcome and I'm so sorry you have to be here. I had a pretty serious heart irregularity, which was fixed about 12 yrs ago and I still have "benign extra heart beats" as the cardiologist put it, especially when I'm stressed out. It didn't cause any problems with my D&C or the surgery I had to have after it either. Just make sure you tell them before you go in, so that if they see anything they know it's normal for you.

As for the last part of your post, there's really nothing you could have done to cause this. It was probably a chromosomal abnormality with the egg. Please don't beat yourself up over what you could have done differently. You did everything right! Just continue to take care of yourself.

The D&C is not so bad, I took the day off after, then felt fine. GL and ((HUGS))

  • I'm so sorry that you're going through this!

My 1st loss was also a missed m/c, and I remember feeling completely blindsided when the dr told me there was no h/b at the first u/s.  I still had what I felt like were strong symptoms.  As some of the other girls said, your body doesn't realize that it's not a viable pregnancy, so unfortunately the symptoms continue.  Mine went away shortly after the d&c.  The procedure was easy, as long as I didn't think about it much.  The recovery would have been ok if I hadn't pushed myself too much.  If you relax and take it easy you'll be fine. The emotional part was definitely the hardest.  If you're on facebook, I highly recommend taking a little time out from it.  Seeing friends post pictures of babies or announce pregnancies make me lose it every time.

I felt the exact same way you did.  I ate right, exercised, never smoked... I didn't understand why it happened to me when I kept hearing people say how they got pregnant without even trying.  Must be nice.  You didn't do a thing wrong though, and you can't blame yourself one bit.  Unfortunately these things happen, which is why we're all here.  I'm so thankful for this board and all the girls who have helped me when I needed it the most.
