How long before you call the doctor?

I have had on and off diarrhea since Saturday. I think I've gone to the bathroom 4 times since then and only one has been normal. I either can't go, or have diarrhea. I've been trying to drink a lot of water and juice so I don't get dehydrated and I figure that's all they'd tell me to do anyway. But my grandma wants me to call the doctor. I feel fine except for that and it makes my stomach sore. What would you do?

Re: How long before you call the doctor?

  • You've only gone 4x since Sat? Or you've been going many times a day since Sat? If it's only a few times I would just keep drinking fluids (maybe less juice) and eat some bland food like rice or bananas. Give it a few more days unless you feel that you're getting dehydrated.

If you're going many times a day it's probably time to call.

I've only gone 4 times since then. It's either super uncomfortable if I can't go, or painful if I can. Before pregnancy I was normally going 3x a day with no problem.

No juice, it's an osmotic diuretic so it draws fluid into the intestines which further exacerbates diarrhea and worsens dehydration. Has it been straight up liquid stool or just soft (sorry I'm an RN so I'm blunt). Four times since Saturday actually isn't bad, if you were having 4+ liquid stools a day then you should notify your OB. For now, drink plenty of water and gatorade to replace electrolytes, and follow a BRAT diet until the diarrhea stops (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). But no juice!

  • Well maybe it would be a good idea to call. It could just be your uterus has caused your intestines to shift into an uncomfortable position. If you've had constipation issues since getting pregnant you may also have a build-up or partial blockage which could also cause diarrhea.

Good luck, and I hope you get it figured out soon. As someone with looooots of poop problems I know how uncomfortable and sucky it can get.

It's pretty liquid, that's why it hurts so bad. I'll definitely stay away from the juice, I'm just so sick of water. I have an appointment the week after next so if it doesn't get worse I'll just mention it to her then. I just wish I could get a medium where I don't have to strain to get it out or have diarrhea.

  • I called my doc's nurse line after over 48 hrs of straight up liquid stools.  I was told as long as I was keeping fluids down to stick to a bland diet and keep hydrating.  If it lasted another 2 days I was supposed to call back.  Thankfully it went away.

This. Either way, I hope you feel better OP. Consistent liquid poop burns like a torch to the anus.

  • I've had the same issue the past two days! It is so frustrating because I am either horribly constipated or having diarrhea. I feel like it is just my uterus shifting things around and irritating my intestines. I asked my (doctor) dad if it was a problem and he said not yet but if it persisted through the end of the week to get it checked out. I have been drinking A LOT of plain water and eating a pretty bland diet (when I have an appetite). I hope you feel better soon!

Poor thing! It looks like the other gals have given you good advice. I hope that you feel better soon!

  • I've had complications caused from gastric bypass that often causes diarrhea....LONG boring story.  My OB/Gyn and bariatric specialists have always ok'd the use of Imodium.  Pepto Bismal contains aspirin, but Imodium doesn't.  Always double check with your OB or pharmacist though...they all have different opinions.
  • Hope you're feeling better soon. I would stick to water, try the BRAT diet. Remember this for later when your child is older and drinking juice someday. Juice = diarrhea. A lot.

  • Are you on prenatals (hopefully, yes)? My pharmacy stopped carrying my prenatal so my doctor switched me to a different one and I started having similar symptoms to you. I told my doctor and she switched me to another one and the problem cleared up. Just another thought. Good luck! :o)
