Since May, i've been back and forth to the hospital a total of 6 times for them to look at what I was initially told was BV. I had a greenish discharge and and itch that wouldn't go away, not to mention a really bad burning "down there."
I was given antibiotics to take along with various creams, all of which didn't help. At my last appointment two weeks ago, I was told it was a minor yeast infection and to use Monistat 7. I did for a week but it's still hanging around. I went for my regular check up today and the midwife I've been seeing let me know that she wasn't going to treat me anymore since my body doesn't seem to be responding to the drugs. I hate taking anything anyway, and being pregnant and taking these things scares me.
I still have a green type of discharge which she said could just be "normal" for me. Everything i've read has said green indicates infection. She told me I don't have anything horrible and baby should be okay. I don't know though, I'm not really content with her answer.
Has anyone else ever had green discharge while pregnant? It's not thick or anything, just enough to make me worry.
Thanks in advance!
Re: TMI Discharge question
Hey there. I'm sorry that you have to go through this. I don't have this issue now, but in the past I have had BV. My dr at the time gave me metronidazole gel that I inserted vaginally and that cured it. If they haven't prescribed this for you, I would ask that they do so as long as it's safe during pregnancy.
Good luck!
I've tried the metronidazole gel 2x, the pills, clindamycin pills, clindamycin gel and Monistat 7. All with no luck! The doc said she isn't going to prescribe anything more since nothing seems to help...so i'm kinda like ok... NOW WHAT?!
Thanks for the tips!
I had BV around 12 weeks as well. Luckily, the gel took care of it, but I've been concerned about recurrences so I've been doing natural prevention methods.
I do yogurt vaginally twice a week or so (you can do it more often to actually treat, rather than prevent). I use organic, plain yogurt. I actually use a plastic tampon applicator, take the applicator apart, remove the tampon, put plastic wrap/seran wrap over the bottom part (so that it will push up the yogurt), put the yogurt in the top part of the applicator (where the tampon had been), but the applicator back together, and insert it just like you would a regular tampon. It's messy, so be prepared to lie on your back on a towel for 20 minute or so and then wipe away excess or whatever has drained, but try to leave some in there. KEY: Make sure you're using a yogurt that has active lacto acidophilus cultures in it; not all brands have it.
I also take probiotics. I use the Jarro-dophilus original formula made by Jarrow Formula brand. You want it to contain lacto acidophilus in high amounts as that is the counteracting good bacteria to the bacteria present in bv (at least this is what was told to me). I take three per day.
So far, this is working for me. That said, I have heard of people who just have it permanently in pregnancy, which sucks - but they just haven't been able to kick it. It's worth a try with the at-home remedies though! Hope this is helpful... I know it's scary, but they tell me I shouldn't worry about it...
Thanks for the tips! I am especially interested in trying probiotics and will look into Jarro-dophilus.
It is so scary and I hate knowing I have some type of infection down there that could potentially harm the baby if it goes untreated. When the doc told me yesterday that it just might be something I have to deal with during the pregnancy, I kind of stopped thinking its as life threatening as some of the stories i've read about it being.
I hope yours goes away and stays away. There's nothing more frustrating!
FWIW I talked to my Midwife about BV because I've had it off and on for years and she said that the studies that claimed a link between BV and early labor are old and haven't really been proven. She seemed unconcerned as well. So I wouldn't freak out too much about the baby.
Thank you so much for the info!
I need to chill out a bit!
This, please. Go to a doctor (not a MW) and have them do a vaginal swab so they can send to the lab for analysis. They need to grow the organism on a plate to determine exactly what kind of infection you have. Some vaginal infections are caused by a virus, therefore will NOT respond to antibiotics.
A medical professional should never "give up" on treating a patient for an infection especially when a patient is pregnant. Contrary to what a PP's MW told her, some vaginal infections CAN cause complications during pregnancy so I wouldn't take any chances.
I've gone to 5 different Dr's (aside from the MW) for this problem and they've only told me the same thing. Then the Midwife i've been seeing told me she doesn't know and gives up. So, I really don't know what to do. I've seen my midwife for this, 2 different nurse practitioners, and 3 OB GYNS and they've told me it's BV. I really don't know what more I can do! I have filed a complaint with the hospital and am hoping to get some satisfaction and answers from that. This has been going on for 3.5 months now!
Im in California and belong to Kaiser and when you have Kaiser for medical insurance, you're stuck going to their group of hospitals. Had I known then what I know now about them, I would NEVER have gotten insured through them. I definitely plan on switching as soon as open enrollment through my job comes up.
Would you suggest I just go to a general MD for this and not an OBGYN?
