Questions about the JJ Cole Bundle Me

If you are getting the JJ Cole Bundle Me for your car seat I have a couple of questions. What made you decide on that type? Are youable to just put the baby in there with out a jacket for winter time? Of course you would have to put some type of hat on the baby.

I'm guessing this is the purpose of these bundle me's so you don't have the fuss of dealing with a winter snowsuit/jacket? I had a summer baby so I'm looking into options since I'm due in January and live where it's cold.

Re: Questions about the JJ Cole Bundle Me

  • I got a pretty lightweight one, because DS is a sweaty beast. The reason for the bundleme is because babies can not wear jackets in their car seats safely (the straps won't be secure).

Anything that goes behind the baby in the carseat is a no-no.

You want something similar that is like shower-cap. It just goes on TOP of the carseat, not behind the baby as well.

  • JJ Cole Bundle Me's are not recommended for use in car seats.  They are a layer of padding that come between your baby and the seat, which is a big no no in car seats.  (Your car seat manual will tell you this.)  Our hospital won't let you take your baby out with a cover like the JJ Cole Bundle Me.

What you need to look for is a cover that is like a shower cap - just goes on over top of the seat and in no way comes between the seat / straps / or baby.  I haven't looked for one since we had DS, so I'm sure there are a ton more on the market now, but the brand we got was Kiddopotamus (which I think was bought out by Summer Infant).

Winter snowsuits on babies in car seats are also a no-no.  Thick padding can compress in an accident causing your baby to move too much.  You want your baby to be tight in the straps without any supplemental padding.

Warmth is provided by either a shower cap style cover, or a blanket laid on top of the baby once the baby is securely tightened in.

  • Please consider getting a car seat cover that goes around the outside of the carrier so that nothing is inbetween the car seat & the baby. Putting a layer of thick fleece under the baby limits your ability to tighten the straps fully, despite thinking that they are tight enough. Car seat companies & the highway safety patrol warn against using these. I believe (I could be wrong) that some car seats even void their warranties if you use products like this as they cannot be held liable.

  • (Lurking from 3rd tri; I totally spent a lot of time researching this for this winter.)

I think it depends on what you're going to use it for. The original Bundle Me goes in the car seat (rather than just over) and most car seat techs consider this unsafe because there's not supposed to be anything in between the seat and your kid. (Also, this can void car seat warranties because it's after after-market product in the seat.) So if you're thinking about using it while driving, it's not necessarily safe; you'd be better off with a blanket over your baby to keep her/him warm. If you're just using it when you take the car seat out of the car, that's not a problem then and it looks quite warm.

They sell a JJ Cole Car Seat Cover that's more like a shower cap- it goes around the seat rather than in it, and that's generally thought of to be more safe.

this. Although with DD we still used the bundle me when we were in the stroller or in and out of places. If you do get one just remember to unzip it once the heat kicks on in the car... Those things are toasty, so add heat and you have a sweaty shivering baby when you get outside ;-)

This.  We found out recently that the hospital we are delivering at will not give the car seat a clear safety check with one of those in there.  That was actually how I found out they are not safe.  They check the car seat in the hospital before they can discharge the baby, and it will not pass inspection with a Bundle Me in it (the traditional one, not the cap style).  That was enough for me to make the decision not to use one....can't really argue with that.

  • Thanks for all the great advice Moms! We had registered for one of regular Bundle Mes because we didn't know any different, but now, based on all your advice, I have gone back and re-registered for the JJ Cole Car seat cover so LO is safe AND warm this winter (assuming it gets cold here this winter)!

I had to do the exact same thing.  One of the reasons I am so thankful for this board....I always get great advice!

  • As pp said the Bundle me is not recommended for car seats.  I do use mine for the stroller though so it is not a total waste.  For the car seat I recommend something like this.  https://thegreennursery.com/rosk-cold-weather-pouch.html

This is also nice because you can attach it to a wrap (moby) or front carrier for the winter.

Me too!  It's so irritating to me that they even make things that aren't safe for babies.  Oh well, the covers are cheaper than the Bundle Me, so that's some good news!

  • I had one with my son, 8 years ago and was never told it was unsafe...I was about to tell you they're great but I'm glad I read all the new info.  Obviously I'm a little rusty on all this stuff!  But you definitely want something that goes over the seat for a winter baby...blankets always get kicked off! Even when they're little.

  • Awww man, now i'm bummbed. WTF! Ok so is this a good replacment?https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12476012

  • We considered getting one of these for our first baby and I am glad that we did not for several reasons.  First, the aforementioned safety issues were a concern.  Second, I couldn't justify using one when a blanket would accomplish the same result.  We dressed our little guy warmly (no jacket or snowsuit), buckled him in, and then tucked a blanket or two around him.  He was fine in the car and out and about--we even took walks nearly daily with him on our typical walking route--and we had a very cold winter that year (early 2010).  Please, don't waste the money on a Bundle Me.

If you are looking for something to keep baby warm, I am not sure that will do much good.  Something like this is what I bought, mine is just a different brand.

     https://www.amazon.com/JJ-Cole-Seat-Cover-Khaki/dp/B003ZUXQXU

It goes around the edges of the outside of the seat, not behind baby at all.

  • I'm getting one for the stroller. I hadn't really considered using it in the carseat, but it seems like it would get too hot. I like to take walks with my dog and figure it will be a great way to ease back into shape once the baby comes. Since it will be February, the bundle me + canopy should protect him/her pretty well as long as it's not too cold.
