Solid question

I've been in denial of DD getting big and just EBF until she was 6 months.  This would probably be my FFFC because I could just care less about her eating real food and our routine changing.  I digress, but thought I'd explain why my question probably belongs on the 3-6mo board!

Anyway, from what I've read, what my friends have told me, it seems like there isn't a right way to introduce solid since it's just for practice (other than news foods every 3-4 day).  My question is, since she is 6 mo would it be ok to introduce single level 2 foods?

Oh and to the one that thinks they are the bump supreme, I hope my question is boring to you.  I don't have a chance to post a lot, but I still enjoy our board without the your immature drama.

Re: Solid question

  • DD just started solids at 6.5 months (due to a significant family history of allergies with me and DS, and she is already allergic to milk and soy). Anyways, I make most of her food, but we started with stage 1 consistency just to make sure she could do it okay. We have quickly moved up to, what I would consider, state 2 consistency, and we can probably even go a bit chunkier now. Also, since we started so late, she was READY for solids. She pretty much eats every drop of food that we give her and doesn't really spit any out at all. The girl likes to eat.

I still don't even give her solids everyday, so those days, she's still EBF.

  • I would start out with a thin pur?e consistently just so she can get used to the act of eating then move her up when she seems ready. My DS's first food at 5 months was mashed up avocado thinned with formula. Now we are on chunkier pur?es and even some finger food (puffs, cut up banana, bits of cheese). It's the texture that they have to get used too.

I'm not familiar with what the different stages are but we started ds on cereals and fruit pur?e when he was 4 months once per day. Now we're up to three times per day and added in pur?e veggies and chicken.  He also was ebf so he gets boob maybe 3 or 4 times a day in between meals and then if he wakes up at night.

I agree with pp that even though your lo is older I would start from the beginning so she can get used to the different textures and swallowing.

  • I was all prepared to give an honest response to this, but the snark at the end chapped my ass.

So here's my honest two cents anyways-I think you do what you're comfortable with that is not totally nuts ( i.e. no feeding the kid a jalepeno, but stage 1 stage 2, eh.  If its safe and baby likes, it we do it.  I really think its all practice at this point.

Meanstwhile, as for the other stuff. I don't think any of us ever snarked about legit baby questions, its more the "what shoes should I wear today" stuff that we got snotty about/  The boar dis more tame now than it once was this is simply a fact.  Some of us wish it were a little more exciting, some of us don't.  But the b!thcy is happening on both sides (and I own my part of it).

  • Only reason I started giving DS purees is because I don't want to hear from the pediatrician at our 6 month appointment how we should be doing it. I really am not up for lying to her right now, either. So purees it is!

And...DS loves them. Absolutely. Haven't found one he hasn't liked, but then again, we've really only tried bananas, apples, pears, and sweet potatoes. He has yet to give me a squinchy face of disgust. Onto to broccoli and peas and beans or whatever DH has bought.

I'm not sure if we are giving him stage 1 or stage 2, because, honestly, I didn't realize there was such a thing until now and DH does the shopping.

  • Thanks! The tecture comments make sense. So far she's done well with the oatmeal, carrots. Peas are not her favorite, but I can get her to eat a little. I attempted to make carrotsn last night, so hopefully she can eat those. They aren't as thin as the gerber stuff, but still seem like a puree. Thanks again!

  • I don't think it's a really big deal whether you do stage one or two if you are concerned with the baby choking or anything like that.

With my DD it depends what it is, some things such as avocado she needs quite thin (I just add water my doc said it's ok just to add water as she hates anything with formula in it). Sweet potato I thin just a bit b/c it can be sticky but I dont think she'd care what consistency it is as she loves it! I gave her some fish over the weekend, just tiny little chunks and she gobbled it up! Other chunky stuff she doesn't like (hated peas and the littel texture they had). So I guess it really depends on your baby, so just play with it and see what she likes :)

  • Baby-led-weaning involves skipping pureed food and just giving them solids. So far  DS2 gets avocado slices, bananas, sweet potato 'fries" and steamed broccoli. I also let him "eat" a slice of steak. He just sucked on it, and I watched him like a hawk. He loves shoving food in his mouth, but he's still working on the whole swallowing without gagging thing. I don't worry about feeding him at any meals except for when we all eat supper together. It's pretty messy, but fun. I think the website that explains it better is babyledweaning.com.

  • We just started Sam on oatmeal Monday for the first time and she will be 7mos next week. DS also didn't start until 6mos. You can feed whatever is normally safe to feed at that age. Wholesomebabyfood.com has great references for when to start what foods.
