I'm just going to put it out there cause the first step is admittance....
I'm crazy excited about having my first kid, and the fact that it's a boy is awesome, so I've been purchasing everything off of our registry and buying clothes like a crazy person. Sadly my wife's showers are next week and her work shower is a few days after that...I'll try to leave something on the registry, but damn, it's fun buying my son lots of random crap.
Okay. I feel better now.
Re: I have an addiction
You are lucky your wife is not ripping into you about shopping off the registry. From what I saw with my wife's showers, people are probably letting it be known that there is nothing left on the registry and she has to get more stuff on there.
We got a s*itload of clothes at her showers. The kids closet is already full of stuff. He has more clothes than I do!!!
I am guilty as well though. A month ago I was at a Brewer game in my company's suite. I was with a bunch of people at work, and all I wanted to do was creep out of there and head down to the pro shop to shop for some gear for the boy.
I found a receiving blanket that had the team logo and name embroidered in the blanket, which is key to me when I buy an team apparel.
Cost me $40 and I did not even hesitate. $40 for a receiving blanket.
Well, if your families are anything like mine, the registry are more of a guideline. We wound up with something like 10 blankets, I don't think we registered for more than 1. We also got toys we didn't register for and people will buy outfits they find cute, even if you registered for specific clothes. So while shopping off the registry limits what can be bought (that you specifically picked), unless you clean it out, you will likely be ok. There may be a comment here or there that there wasn't much to pick from, but they'll either get you a gift card, or go off registry if they can't find anything.
With our first, we would go to Babies R Us and Buy, Buy Baby on every Wednesday and deem it "Baby day" since the baby turned one week older in mom every Wednesday. Some weeks we would buy, some we wouldn't. I work in a job that puts me in multiple retail outlets a day, so if I walked past a baby outfit I liked, I might pick it up here or there, but they were from places we didn't register.
Yeah, we got a bunch of stuff that we did not put on the registry as well. What amazed us is the fact that the few high ticket items that we put on our registry were given to us at her showers. We feel very blessed to have such great family and friends who got us all of the things that we will need for Jacob.
Registration tip:
We made our registration "birthday" 1 month before the actual due date. Then we got our coupon for all the rest of the stuff before the baby was born. That we could pick up everything we wanted at a discount and shop without a new born baby. It will be a pain to go out right afterwards, and its good to save the 15% or w/e on big ticket items you want for the arrival, like video-monitor, co sleeper, or w/e you plan on using for the baby sleeping.
Then you don't feel so bad going out and buying all that stuff, since you get the discount.
That's an awesome tip. It's hard for us to shop now with my wife being 8 months...I can't imagine doing it was a newborn in tow...
