My husband and I are planning on co-sleeping when LO arrives, not only because we think it will be beneficial, but also because we're in a one bedroom apartment.
I'm open to doing what works for us, but as a FTM at this point I'm more comfortable with having a separate sleeping space for baby, rather than immediately bed sharing.
I'm leaning towards getting a crib that we can set up to side-car to our queen sized mattress, mostly because it seems like the crib will be big enough as the baby grows (vs. growing out of a bassinet or Rock n' play) and if we eventually find that baby does need his/her own room to sleep well, we can use the crib as a safe sleeping place in another room. I'm also not opposed to get a second-hand crib as long as it meets all the current recommendations and standards for cribs.
So my question is, whether looking at second-hand or new cribs, what should I look for in a crib, especially if we are going to side-car it?
Re: How to find a crib to side-car
Ditto to this! J is almost 6 months, and still sleeps in it.
Only problem is it is no longer recommended after your LO can pull up to standing, so it doesn't work long term, you will still need to eventually get a real crib.
So if I'm looking for a crib to side car, do I have get a "convertible" crib so that it will be stable with three sides? Or can you get a traditional crib and take one side off and it is still stable?
ETA: Do you think something like this would be safe? It can be a traditional crib and you can remove one of the sides for a "toddler bed"

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it. One of the reasons we are leaning towards a crib is because it could be a little more versatile than a co-sleeper or bassinet and we're on a budget. Maybe we'll start with 4 sides and see how it goes and side-car it if we feel like that would be a better fit.
