Eczema

Do any of your babies suffer from it too?

DS has been battling it since he was four months old. His cheeks are crazy red/bumpy/flaky and he also gets it on the back of his knees, and in inner crease of his elbows. Sometimes it even shows up on his back or thighs but that's easy to control. We've tried 1% hydrocortisone 2-3 times a day covered with aquaphor or Eucerin. Didn't work. Then our pediatrician bumped us up to 2% hydrocortizone for 3 days, topped with lotion, alternated with bactroban. That worked for about 3-4 days then it came right back. I hate him being on the steroid creams, so I decided to try something new and went the all natural route without my pediatrician knowing. I tried Aveeno Eczema therapy for a few days. It didn't really work, so then I switched to the California Baby Calendula Cream. His arms/legs have finally cleared up but his face still looks so bad. I'm at my wits end! I'm thinking maybe the detergant we're using for his laudry is affecting him so I'm thinking of going free and clear, but that's the only other idea I have.

Do any of you have any other suggestions??

Re: Eczema

  • What kind of soap are you using?  I've been using Dove sensitive bars per the Pedi, and it has worked SO WELL!  Also just because you are using Free & clear doesn't mean that there isn't something in there irritating him.  At first I used Tide Free & Clear, then switched to ALL Free & Clear and he broke out horribly.  The Dr. Actually recommended Dreft. I kinda rolled my eyes because I knew there was more perfumes in Dreft than in the free & clear but lo and behold it has done wonders on his skin!

I've also been using Aveeno eczema lotion on him at night after his bath and its helped a lot.

Have you started solids?  Are you sure he isn't allergic to one of solids? Green beans make my LO's face break out really bad.  I've stopped giving him green beans for a little while. HTH!

  • First off, I have to tell you that we've called our little one "Nugget" from day one so I love that you do too! He's still "nugget" every now and then - :-)

Well, we've been using the same soap as you since 2 months old, the Dove sensitive, and I only use it on his really dirty areas, otherwise it's just water. Lately I've switched it up to the Aveeno Calming wash. It has the collodial oatmeal in it so I thought that might help. It hasn't really seems to make a difference at all but I keep trying! I always load him up with lotion within 5 minutes of his bath to try to keep in that moisture too! He clearly has very stubborn skin.

Good to know about the Dreft, I thought the free and clear would be better since it doesn't have perfumes too! How funny. Maybe if I wash his sheets in that it might help (he sleeps on his stomach 100% of the time now)

As for the solids - he started at 5 months but he had the eczema before we started them so I assumed it couldn't have anything to do with his food. Especially since neither no one on either side of our families has food allergies. He's literally had the eczema for the past 4 months with only a break of about 3 days when he was on the 2.5% hydrocortizone cream. Other than that it's always been there. Poor little dude.

  • DS has it in the back of both knees, the crease of his elbows, and behind his neck. I called the pedi and she recommended a lotion called Vanicream. I put Baby Aveeno eczema on in the morning and the Vanicream on at night and after his baths. It has been working very well! It has been maybe a month, not even, since starting the Vanicream and his eczema is finally disappearing. You can get it at any pharmacy or any store with a pharmacy. We got it at Walmart.

  • I know this sounds totally weird, but my sister had really bad eczema as a baby.  My great aunt suggested that my mom give her goat's milk (she was about 2 years old) and it worked!  Now, I'm not saying feed your baby goat's milk, but there are lots of goat's milk soap products that you can get.  Maybe you could try that?
