I would check around and see if any clubs or organizations you belong to offer estate planning at all. We were just about to hire a lawyer to do ours when we learned that our church/denomination actually offered free estate planning (along with power of attorney stuff etc.) for free.
Of course their hope is that when we are older we will intend some of our resources to them, but they wont even allow families with small children to assign any assets to the church until our kids are of legal age. They were very professional and thorough in helping us set up everything we would need to arrange. Everything is double checked by their legal department. It was really well done and they even store a copy of all our paperwork in their vault for backup.
I think I've since learned that our alma mater university (a private school) offers similar services. I don't know how common it is, but it was a huge blessing for us. The fees for a lawyer to do it would have been pretty high.

I put H in charge of this. He's a lawyer, but not a wills and trusts lawyer. Still, I figure he can do better than I would.
I have heard/been told its very easy to write your own will with a little online research.
It is in fact very easy to do it yourself. That's what we will do. As long as it's notorized and legal it doesn't matter who writes it up. When H was in the Marine Corps. we wrote our own up, had it notorized and that was that! Like Rora said, we did some online research to get some sort of ideas of how we wanted it written.

Re: Wills: Who is writing it?
We had an attorney do both our will and trust.

H's cousin wrote ours, because she is a family lawyer.
There is no way I could have done all of that myself.
Vroom, vroom.
