Blocked tear duct surgery?

My son is scheduled next week for tear duct surgery. He's had multiple round of antibiotics and seen a pediatric eye specialist.  The surgery itself I'm not concerned about. It's the anesthesia that worries me.  I've read some recent research that anesthesia before two has potential for learning disabilities later on. I am definitely a first time mom. Has anyone else had this surgery? And how did it go for you?   Or has anyone else had another child who had this that just "grew out of it"? Thanks!

  • My daughter was in this same situation as well.  Antibiotics would only clear it up for a short time and then the drainage would return.  She finally had the surgery and it went so well and def worth it because she no longer has this problem.  From what I was told, that research was based on children under the age of two going under anesthesia two or more times so I don't think you need to worry.  They also said that its such a quick procedure that they only need to use a little so they are not as high risk.  I will say, taking them into the OR is one of the hardest things I have ever done or will do.  Its a horrible feeling holding them while they put them to sleep but it is important to keep it together until at least you leave the room so they don't get more upset.  Singing their favorite song helps or telling them a story... good luck!

  • I don't have any issues with my daughter but both my nephews had this surgery twice - (they did one eye at a time). They are 5 and 3 now and so far no issues at all. I'm sure your son will do great! Good Luck!

  • My girls have both been under anesthesia for ear tubes, at 14 months for DD1 and 10 months for DD2. I had heard the same thing about anesthesia before the age of two, so I checked into it and asked the ENT some questions. PP is right, the study showed a correlation between two exposures and possible learning disabilities. But I believe it was just a correlation, not causation, so they can't say it will cause problems. Our ENT was not at all concerned by the study (and her son has had 4 sets of tubes, so lots of anesthesia!).

ETA: DD2 did have a blocked duct. It cleared up for good around 8ish months, but the pedi said if it hadn't cleared up by a year we'd consult with a specialist about possible surgery. Our friends LO also had it, and his cleared up a week before his scheduled surgery.
