Anybody EBF and having issues introducing the bottle to the baby?
I go back to work in 2 weeks. So last night we tried to introduce the bottle to DD for the first time. I left the room and DH tried to give it to her. It was warm. Epic failure. She screamed and refused it.
Any of you run into this and have any suggestions? We didn't have this issue with DS. We are going to keep trying and also try giving it to her when she's not so hungry next time.
TIA!
Re: EBF and bottles
this.
The milk should be at body temp, maybe it was too warm?
We're still working on this, but she's getting better. The first day, she alternated between screaming and napping for 2 hours before she took the bottle. The next day it took 4 hours. We've gotten it down to 5 minutes of screaming after about a week.
What seems to be working- swaddling so she can't push the bottle away, shhing when she cries, and I can't make eye contact when she finally starts to suck or she'll immediately stop. We've been consistent about giving the bottle to her every afternoon so she knows what to expect, and we are persistent- she does not get to nurse unless she takes the bottle. I hate listening to her scream when I've got what she wants right here. but if I give in she'll learn that she just needs to scream long enough to get the boob.
Good luck!
what kind of bottle are you using? when ds gets a bottle we use tommee tippee because it has a very wide nipple and is shaped more like a breast than most bottles out there.
We learned that the temp we were giving the milk at to dd wasn't hot enough. So we let it sit in a cup of hot water for a good couple of minutes. FWIW we are using evenflo glass bottles with dr. Browns preemie nipples and so far so good.
Good luck!!
I agree with others, just keep at it consistently and baby will get on board eventually. You may want to try another bottle though- that is what I would do if I were having a problem.
If you have another baby, I would recommend starting the bottle sooner than 2 months though. As long as bfing is going well, it is best to intro it at about a month or a little earlier, from my own experience with my own kids and what I have read. As you know, by 2 months they are starting to have their own opinions about what they like and dislike in everything, including starting a bottle! it's easier before they get so opinionated.
