Anyone else meausuring behind?

I'm only measuring a week behind. I know a week isn't a lot, and my doctor didn't seem concerned, but of course I think of questions after I leave the office.

Does anyone know what exactly this means? I have seen posts that other people who are measuring behind/ahead then have an ultrasound to check the baby. How far ahead/behind do you have to measure before they become concerned?

Also, does this mean that just my belly is behind or possibly the baby is small too?

I'm just wondering if any STMs had a similar experience before and can answer any of my questions or provide some insight.

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Anyone else meausuring behind?

  • I'm behind, as well, by two or three weeks. (They won't redo my growth scan until next week, so I don't know how the baby is measuring. All I have is my fundal height at the moment, which is at least two weeks behind.)

It can mean a few different things. You could just have a small kiddo in there. You could be on the verge of a growth spurt. It's possible that there are growth restriction issues, but that's less likely. I'd say if you're only a week behind it's not a big deal. Give it a week or so and you'll probably be caught right back up. Smile

  • I've measured behind at my last two appointments, my midwife said she isn't worried as long as I am consistently behind... If that makes sense? Hope this helps!

  • At my 32w appointment my uterus measured at 31w.  My MW didn't seem concerned so I didn't worry about it.  I don't know if measuing behind means you typically deliver late, but I was 9 days late with DD based on my O date so maybe my body takes a bit longer to cook babies.

I'm sure there's nothing to worry about especially since it's only a week difference :)

  • See I was measuring ahead and at my appointment two weeks ago I was measuring a week behind. My OB didn't seem all that concerned though. We are having an ultrasound and another measurement tomorrow. Pretty much I'm putting a lot of trust in my OB. I'm not going to freak out about something unless I think she is.
  • Remember that measuring one week behind is just a centimeter difference, so a tiny amount (and probably just over the margin of error anyway).

I measured behind a couple of times during my pregnancy with DD and she was born at 8lbs, 8oz.  I think until you're consistently measuring several weeks ahead or behind, there's no reason to rush to an u/s.  Try not to worry - more than likely, everything is fine.

  • One week ain't notin'! :) I have been fluctuating between 1-2 weeks ahead and they have scheduled a growth ultrasound for 37 weeks.

I am sure if the doctor was concerned they would schedule an ultrasound.

If it helps at all read this yesterday:

"My daughter was born at 41 weeks (had to be induced) and weighed 10lbs 8oz.  I measured "small/below average" both in belly measurements and sonogram measurements the entire pregnancy."

  • They did a growth ultrasound when my belly was measuring 4 weeks behind/hadn't grown any over the past 2 weeks.  The baby was measuring slightly small (30th percentile, so still in the totally normal range, just hopefully a little easier to push out.  I think they said that she was ~1 week behind, so my belly size made it seem like she was a lot smaller than she actually was).  The measurements can vary quite a bit based on how the baby is laying too.  This last time, I was still small (I don't know exactly how much) but my MW was really happy to see that I was growing.  As long as you are growing, even if you are small, it doesn't sound too concerning.

  • My belly was measuring almost 2 weeks behind and at our growth scan last Friday baby was measuring a week behind.  They aren't too concerned, just said I'm probably going to have a small baby...that as long as you're over the 10th percentile, they don't worry too much.

However, I was measuring behind around 27 weeks and went in for a growth scan then and he was measuring right where he was supposed to be.  Apparently, the position he was laying in made me measure small.

I guess that doesn't really help, just know that you're not alone.

  • I have been measuring behind all along.  My Dr got concerned at the last appt 2 wks ago when I was measuring 28 wks 4 days, and I was 33 wks. She gave me 2 weeks to see if the baby would hit a growth spurt and then ordered a U/S to be done this week.  I had it yesterday.  They check the baby's measurements and the amniotic fluid.  Baby is just fine, he/she is just a little peanut tho.  Measuring in the 20% and caught up a little and is now only measuring 3 wks behind.  So she predicts I will just have a baby that is on the smaller side 6-7lbs full term.  My mom had all small babies, so she said I just might bake little babies. The other reason my belly isn't measuring on time is that I have low amniotic fluid.  Not low enough to be concerned, as it is just enough for baby, but they are going to continue to monitor it.

Good Luck- a week behind is not a big worry, You may be on the verge of a growth spurt.

  • I was behind 4 weeks and they called for an u/s check.

FWIW I was also 4 weeks behind with DD and that's when they freaked out and ordered an u/s check then too.

This time around I wasn't worried at all, it's just the way I carry, but the first time I was a bit freaked out.

  • My belly is measuring about 3wks behind, which shocks me because I look about 12 months pregnant. The baby is *probably* fine, I always measure behind when pregnant which always leads to a growth ultrasound around this point. My OB is unconcerned but I guess I'll know more on monday after my appt. DD1 actually was measuring behind [borderline IUGR] so I ended up with NSTs 2x a week and a couple of BPPs until my EDD, just to make sure that she didn't slip further. DD2 though was measuring a week ahead when I had my growth ultrasound, so you never know! My feeling is that this baby is probably also measuring ahead, even though my belly is measuring behind.

Hope that clusterfluck of a paragraph made sense lol.

Oh also, even though it's probably not relevant, lb for lb I've gained the same weight by week for all 3 of my pregnancies.

  • I was measuring right on target up til 30 weeks. At 32 there was no growth. We'll see about tomorrow. I think if I'm still measuring at 30 I will ask if we need to have a look at baby boy.

I measured right on target with DD and she was only 6lbs 11oz. Maybe he is just positioned strangely.

  • I measured a week behind at my appointment two weeks ago...it was the first time that it had happened.

My doc said that up to 2 cm's in either direction is totally normal and that they'll look further if it's 3+.  I had my appointment this morning and I'm back on track at 35 weeks.

  • I'm measuring behind, so I get an u/s this Friday at my appointment.

There are a few reasons you can measure behind, as people have mentioned. You could be at the start of a growth spurt, you could naturally carry in a way that makes a fundal measurement less accurate, the measurement itself could be a margin of error, your baby could be in a transverse position, you could be a smaller person who just has a smaller baby, etc.

    I wouldn't worry!

  • This is the first time i'm measuring behind.  I'm 35 weeks and measuring 34 weeks.  My midwife wasn't concerned and i'm not really either.
