There are just so many to choose from. I have no idea where to start and what if you get one that hurts or doesn't keep my milk flowing good. I am so terrified of spending so much money on something that I have no idea wither it will be comfortable to use and not make me stop breastfeeding before I feel its time to stop. Anyone have any recommendations or advice?
Re: Holy Breast Pump!!
You can read reviews on them or ask friends that have pumped to see what they like.
If you don't have a reason to get one right away, I would wait. See how bf'ing goes and your supply to see what type might be best for how often you'll pump.
If you do get one early, DON'T OPEN THE BOX, that way you can return it if ends up you don't want it or won't use it.
As someone who exclusively pumped for 6 mths, I loved my Medela Pump In Style. I had used the hospital's Medela (triumph maybe?) pump so that was the brand I was most comfortable with and ended up really liking.
This is exactly what I did.
Rented for 1 month (it was only like $20 or something like that too)
Then once I knew it was something I was going to need for sure, I bought a Medela PISA. I loved it and it always worked great for me. Also, I exclusively pumped for 10 months and I never had any problems with it. and I've checked it and it still works now so I will use it for this baby as well.
I have the Medela PIS, Medela Hospital Grade (forgot the name), and the Ameda Purely Yours. I got the best results from the Ameda. I hated the Medela Pump in style.
I too would recommend renting first before investing. The Medela PIS only got 1 ounce of milk for me, while the Ameda I was about to pump 8-10 ounces. it made a big difference for me.
I agree on holding out until you know youre going to use it--whether you rent or just buy one and dont open it.
What you actually NEED depends on your use....will it be everyday / weekdays for work (double electric) or occasional when you go out for an evening (single or double manual)?
Do you need something lightweight like I did since I rode public transit to work and wanted the lightest load possible (ameda) or can deal with something heavier (medela)?
Do you want to be mobile while pumping (Medela Freestyle) or are you okay with being tethered to a table while pumping (almost any other pump!)?
FWIW, I loved my Ameda Purely Yours and used it at work 5 days a week for DDs first year and its still in good shape so I plan to use it for this DD as well. Its on the cheaper side but is still very powerful, one of the lightest weight ones available, and has nice extra features like the ability to use batteries if necessary. I also liked that it has a dial to adjust the suction so you can cater it to what is comfortable for you and what you figure out, through trial and error, results in the most milk output for you.
That being said, Ive heard great things about any Medela pump and if I had a bigger budget, I would go with the Freestyle over any other option due to its compact design, ability to be mobile, and unchanged high quality suction/milk output.
One AWESOME post - I tried to ask something similiar to get the same answers and got a lot of judgement on another board... sigh.
I looked into rental at my hospital and it was going to be $95 for 2 weeks (because I have to pay a cleaning fee, and then buy the parts (Which I could use if I got a specific pump later) and then the rental fee) - So I am planning on buying one - but I'm going to wait until 2-3 weeks after delivery.
My friends who have had a hard time pumping / feeding have all said - give your all - very best and everything you have for 2 - 4 weeks. If its not working for you - then make the choice at that time. Thus.. I think at 2 weeks I'll know better - I do want to introduce a bottle around 3-4 weeks - but I figure WORST case she takes a bottle or two (or heck maybe more) in her first 3 months of formula. TO ME its not a failure to have to supplement while I figure out pumping
I would not buy a manual. Honestly I tried to use one in a pinch once (left my pump at work) and it was terrible. If that was all I had when I came home from the hospital and didn't have the option to pony up the cost I would have quit bfing. I bought a Medela PIS. I kinda wish I had the freestyle but I couldn't afford it. A former bumpie who is a blogger (www.babyrabies.com) loves her hygenia (sp?) that she had for her second child and if I remember correctly she had a PIS with her first child. I'm thinking about getting a hygenia but it's so hard to spring for when I still have my old Medela.
Oh one other good thing with Medela is they will overnight you a new one (within a yr of purchase or your baby's birthday, I forget which) if you have a problem with your pump. My motor started acting weird one day and I had a new one sent, no charge to me whatsoever. I thought that was awesome. You pay a considerable amount of $$ for a pump and you get to a point where your baby and your supply rely on that pump working and it working well.
