Two Under 2

Almost 2 year old and baby coming...crib situation??

Our daughter will be two in a couple months and is still doing really well in her crib, she's hasn't tried to climb out once (as far as we know).  Our little man will be here in December and we are really struggling with how to handle the crib situation.  I want to have little man sleep in a pnp for a few months and see where we our with our daughter then or purchase a another convertible crib for him.  Hubby wants to move our daughter to a big girl princess bed (he was looking at toddler beds which I'm not keen on since it will only work for a couple years and she will outgrow it and can't use it for little man).  His other option was set up the spare bed frame we have which is a full and have her use that with just a mattress and no box spring so it's lower.  His thinking is it will be fun for our daughter with all the new changes in the house.

My thinking is, I'm the one that sometimes battles her over nap time and I'm the one that puts her down for bedtime.  I want her contained for a little longer.  I worry that once the baby is here his crying will wake her up (rooms share a wall) and the last thing I need is her roaming her room and trying to get out at all hours of the night.  I think she will be more likely to fall back asleep if she's stuck in her crib.

What have you ladies done and what's worked or hasn't?  Thank you in advance!!

  • I wish I had your situation, haha! LO is still under 2 and does not do well with his crib - a lot of nights we have to rock him, but he has been good lately about getting himself to sleep, hopefully it sticks. We, unfortunately, had to buy another crib! We do have a bed frame and plan to do the same thing you mentioned, but when LO is ready.

If I was you, I'd try to "big girl bed" - not the princess bed - out for a little bit before your baby comes? That way you can see if it will stick before the baby is here. I'd definitely set it up if I was in your situation. Best case - LO will start sleeping in the bed before December. Worst case - LO will not do well and you will need another crib.

I say give it a shot for maybe a few weeks. I would!

  • Buying a second crib was one of the best decisions we ever made. DS was only 15.5 months (not 2y) when DD was born though. There have been times when DS will protest bed time or nap time. Because he is contained in his crib, he quickly sees that he doesn't have many options. We have been able to maintain a reasonable bedtime and 3+ hour daily naps for DS. Sometimes DD wakes him (or he wakes DD), but because they cannot get up to check things out they usually just go back to sleep.

  • DD will be 21 months when our son is born. We only plan to have DS in a bassinet for maybe 6 weeks before moving him to his own room.

DD loves her crib, and it is a convertible with matching French white furniture. I am planning on keeping her with her own stuff and just buying new stuff (including another crib) for DS -- I figure we'd have to buy new furniture for one of them anyway...so we plan on the kids using their sets for many years to come.

  • We bought another crib set for DD2. I had no desire to try and transition DD1 to a big girl bed while having a newborn. Plus I wanted to keep things as normal as possible for DD1, since adding another child to the family is a huge adjustment.
  • We had DS in a big boy bed at 18 months-DD switched over at 15 months. I wouldn't buy another crib yet-just wait until you get to that point.
  • DS will be 21.5 months or so when DD gets here. He loves his crib, has shown no signs of wanting to transition, so we just bought a whole new nursery. But his is a lifetime/convertible and hers is too.

  • I would buy another crib.  You can get a decent one for less than one week of childcare, and they have a great resale value.  Mine both stopped taking naps for a couple of months when we moved to a bigger bed.
  • Since you already have a full bed I'd try transitioning your LO before buying a new crib.  She may surprise you and do really well in it.  If not, you have enough time to switch back to the crib, even well after #2 arrives since you'll be using the PNP for him.

DD was never a fan of her crib so we switched her to her crib mattress on the floor at 17 months.  Now she's in a twin bed in a frame without the box spring and she loves it.  I had no desire to buy a second crib so I'm glad DD didn't try to force that on us ;)

  • I'd buy a 2nd crib. My boys were/are both great sleepers, and DS1 was 2 when DS2 was born. We didn't move him to a bed till he was 3.5 I'm having DD in 2 days, and there's no way I'd put DS2 in a bed yet! I don't understand the rush for a lot of people to get their kids out of cribs and into beds....so many seem to have constant battle/trouble after that.

  • No double cribs here.  DD was in a toddler bed (borrowed) at 18 months then in a twin bed on a frame by 19 months.  We gated the door so she could not get out and wander but she did great.  We also potty trained at 22 months so I felt she needed the freedom to get up to go potty as well.

    Good luck!
