Heat wave messed up baby's sleep. Need help. (bit long)

We had a short string of hot weather here, and as a result, my baby is a little screwy in her sleep now.

She had two days of long afternoon naps (like until 6pm), and her normal bedtime is right around 6.  For the past two nights she wouldn't fall asleep until 9pm (when it would finally cool down and I would feed (EFF) her again...she must have been thirsty).  In the meantime we would go in after a couple minutes of light squawking, and bring her out to the living room in front of the big fan for a few minutes.  Now it's cooler but I'm wondering what to do if she threatens to sleep too long this afternoon again.

Usually we get a 6p-4a stretch and then 4:30a-6:30a.  We are using the No Cry Sleep Solution.

Also, she has been taking one fewer bottle during the day (refusing it) as a result of the abnormal 9pm feed.  I don't want a day/night reversal situation, so any suggestions of trying to shift away from that would be wonderful!

  • Are you sure you don't want to encourage going to bed at 9 if she wants??  6 is great at first, but I much prefer the 9:30 bedtime now.  We can go out for dinner, meet up with friends, go for walks.  Just a thought.

  • She's totally donesies by 6.  And actually she fixed herself last night!  It was just too hot for her to sleep during the temp spike.  But I think she's also in the process of dropping one of her 4 naps and going to 3 as well.  Yesterday she still had the long afternoon nap but it was over by 3:30, which was perfect!

  • Personally, at this age, I would ignore the clock and follow your baby's cues. We follow sleep cues at all ages unless the child's demeanor is off during the day, but even people who are much more structured than that just let nature lead until at least 6 months.  Your baby is just really young still and her awareness is increasing so, so much every day. She may have just done the totally normal baby business of changing her natural needs and the weather was just a coincidence. Baby sleep does not follow a linear trajectory. It is up, down, and all over the place and then just when you think you have something figured out, it changes. LOL! Kellymom has some great articles on infant sleep that might encourage you about how normal this is. Oh, and be sure to celebrate that you had this EXTRAORDINARY period where you were able to get in some big chunks of sleep. That is really astounding.
