aunt flo

OK, so I am wondering who all has gotten their regular period back. from all I heard before i had DD i was sure I would get it back within a few months even though I've been bf'ing. I have not relied on bf'ing as a reliable form of bc because i figured i would be prego by this point if i did. however, i'm starting to wonder why i haven't gotten it back yet as i have in fact done quite a bit of pumping. and now DD is eating 2 meals a day and hasn't been nursing at night for over 3 months. i usually only nurse about 5 times a day. I know people who it's been over a year for, but i guess i just figured with the pumping and the overnights it would be back by now... not that i'm complaining... but i do wanna have another one at some point ;)

  • trade ya- got my 2nd PP period yesterday and its worst than last month....like wore dark pants to work just in case and turns out thank god because I might as well be hemorhaging.  TMI I know. and the cramps blow. And I  BF, LO is only dabbling in solids and still nurses 2 or 3 times a night.

I've gotten 3 so far (quite regular) and man is it not cool. Lots of bleeding and cramping and my PMS is insane! I was cranky before, now I could seriously hurt somebody... lol

I haven't BFd since DD was about 4 months and at that time she was only BFing once at night.

  • Lucky bum, I had to FF after 2.5 weeks so AF came back no problem about 2 months PP.  But don't always fear, mine is much lighter than it used to be!

I'm right there with you.  I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't gotten AF yet.  I'm not concerned though.  One of my friends didn't get hers until a year PP.  Some women who aren't even BF have to wait a while for their periods to come back.  Definately doesn't mean you aren't ovulating or anything though.

  • I haven't seen AF since last April. I stopped BFing about a month ago and got an IUD about 3 months ago.

  • I formula fed from 6 weeks on so I got mind back at 2 1/2 months.  It's been regular 26ish days ever since, but I temp so I know exactly when she is coming.

As for you, I wouldn't worry.  Some people's bodies just do the hormonal thing as long as you are breastfeeding and so even if you are only feeding once per day, you may not get it back.  My mom didn't get her's for a year after each kid and she obviously had introduced foods before a year old!  My sister EBF her 4 kids and got her's back at 6 weeks every time.  It's just different people's bodies and their reaction to the hormones associated with breastfeeding/having kids.

really??? I had no idea you could be ovulating without a period to follow. is that what you meant? I mean, I know that you ovulate before you get a period so there really is no way to gauge what's going on but I didn't know you could ovulate without the period...

It's not common, but after pregnancy it is more possible while your hormones sort themselves out.  It's why BFing isn't a reliable form of birth control because you may ovulate once or twice before your period comes back.  It's probably less likely to stick if you did become pregnant, but it happens.

I haven't gotten mine yet either. DS is eating solids three times a day and I'm only bfing 3 times during the day (in between meals) and maybe once during the night. I'm not pumping at all. I was sure it would come back but not yet. It kind of worries me because I'd also like to start ttc next year and my periods were always irregular. I'm worried the longer it takes to come back the longer it will take to regulate again.

My doctor told me that you can definitely ovulate while bfing and not get a period. It's something to do with the lining doesn't build up while your bfing so that's why you don't get a period.

YA, that's exactly why i'm slightly concernd... seems like most people i know have gotten it. but i didn't know til namara pointed out the ovulation thing yesterday that you could actually be ovulating without getting the period. i am pretty sure in that case that i have been ovulating since 2 months pp. that makes me feel a little easier, because as i don't want to be pregnant right now, i do want to try again next summer.

  • kellymom.com has good info on BF and fertility. If you BF pretty regularly, I think the avg. for return of AF is around 15 mo. (I think that's with BLW, so it's assuming that BM is the bulk of the baby's diet). It also gives the statistics about how effective (affective?) BF is as a form of BC. Ecological BF (no bottles or nipples) is actually pretty effective until solids, but like other forms of BC not 100% (except refraining which works pretty well... haha!).

I got ppAF at 14 mo with DS1, but it was irregular, and he nursed often. DS2 doesn't nurse as often, and it looks like he will be more into solids than DS1 was at the same point. I keep thinking it will show up sooner this time around.
