For those with an IUD

How soon after delivery can you get an IUD put in? Does it hurt? I'm 95% sure we're done after this LO, but just in case I change my mind I don't want DH to get snipped quite yet. Do you have a preferred one?

Re: For those with an IUD

  • You can get it done right after you give birth or wait until your 6 week checkup.  I can't remember the downside to getting it done right after you give birth but it was a good enough reason for me to choose to wait.  I have the Mirena and so far so good.  It was very easy and comfortable to have inserted.

  • At my six week PP checkup my doctor told me if i wanted it, to let him know and he'll order one. Then call the office when I get my first PPP and they will put it in. You can do it after delivery, but if you are breastfeeding you will need the IUD not an IUC i believe since their liver cannot handle the hormones yet until around 8 weeks of life. I prefer the IUD rather than the IUC. I have a few friends who are on their 2nd or 3rd IUC and they have all developed cysts.

I had mine done 8 weeks after giving birth, and have had it for 10 months. I have the Mirena. My OB told me 8 weeks after is the perfect time to have it placed. Some people say it's a little painful, but honestly, I didn't feel a thing. It was over before I even knew she had started. I've never had an issue with it.

Ditto this exactly. My OB was done inserting it before I even knew he started.

It hurt like a bvtch to get put in, but some people say it is painless

  • I have Mirena  for 11 months now and got it inserted at my 6week pp appt. IDK how your Dr can tell you to wait till your FPPP I got my FPPP in June 2012. I gave birth in July 2011 and had the IUD inserted in september 2011. I would of been 11 months without birth control. Maybe its different if you are FF vs BF?
  • Also it hurt.. Im not gonna lie but 5 min of pain for 5yrs of birth control. Not bad!
  • I got the hormone-free copper IUD (Paraguard is the name, I think) at 8 weeks pp.  It has been awesome.  They gave me a local anesthetic and there was some mild cramping for about a day afterward and it has been great ever since.  I am BF and my cycle returned about two months ago and has been very regular.  Some side effects of the copper IUD are supposedly heavier than normal periods with more cramps, but I have not experienced either.  Honestly it is the same as it was prior to my boys being born.  GL in your decision!

  • Oh, and the copper IUD is good for 10 years.

  • I had a Mirena put in at 8 months postpartum and holy mother of god it hurt.  The insertion itself was fine, but I had pretty good pain in my uterus after it was in place.  My uterus tilts to the right so it was all localized to the right side.  They even got the u/s machine out to make sure it was placed correctly.  I was pretty much down and out for the rest of the day and still uncomfortable the next day.  By the day after that I felt back to normal.

  • I got mine 7 weeks after my c-section. It was no big deal at all. No more uncomfortable as a pap smear, and I had no cramping or pain afterward. Though I did bleed for a couple of weeks.

I got Paragard bc I didn't want hormones, but I think I'd go with Mirena if I could do it over. Turns out my own hormones are a little wacky, so I could've used that extra little boost. And periods are INTENSE on Paragard. Like bleeding until I'm dizzy kind of intense. With nasty cramps. I'm actually considering asking my doc to Rx a low-dose bcp just to give me some relief.
