Recommend your family SUV!

So I am unexpectedly looking for a new SUV for our family vehicle. Anyone have one that they absolutely love and recommend for safety, comfort, etc? I need it to have good space in the trunk, room in the back for 2 car seats & a 10 lb furbaby Smile

Re: Recommend your family SUV!

  • We love our Mercury Mountaineer, which is the Mercury version of a Ford Explorer. DH does exhaustive research on cars (it's like a weird hobby of his) and he swears the next family car that would be the best fit with us-2 kids, 2 dogs taking lots of road trip vacations-is the Ford Flex. Personally as much as I swore I would never be a mini-van mom, their space, functionality, and good gas mileage has won me over, I would get one in a heartbeat.

  • We have a Mazda CX9 and I love it! It drives smoothly and gives good gas mileage. It seats 7 people and very roomy! My husband loves it too when he drives it:-)

  • We have a Highlander. It has a 3rd row that folds down. We almost never need the 3rd row for seating so it's always down and that gives us lots of cargo space.

This is one I was actually going to look at! Have you had it long? Any service issues or anything?

  • I love my GMC Acadia..it's basically a minivan on the inside- super roomie with a third row- but an SUV on the outside.
  • Another vote for the Highlander.  We love ours.  More than enough space and drives so comfortably.

  • Ok so for the CR-V fans - is it small? I know they are classified as "Small SUV". Could we comfortably fit 2 adults, 2 car seats, dog and gear in for a road trip? I need the trunk to be able to hold at least 1 hockey bag as well.

  • We got it in April...brand new! I love it and NO issues. Just had maintenance and all looked great!

  • I love my parent's Toyota Venza (super roomy - but no third row).  My girlfriend just got a GMC Acadia - she loves it and has three older kids.  My BIL has a Ford Flex and I hate it, the seats are uncomfortable and the ride isn't as nice as other SUVs, it's kind of like driving a tank, lots of room though.

  • I have a venza.  We joke that it is an old person car since mainly people my parents age have one.  But, we have a rear facing marathon in it, and my seat is almos tthe whole way back in front.  A dude who is 6'3 can sit comfortably in the back.  It holds a TON in the back area, and the seats recline in the back too.  I LOVE IT.  Mine is a lease but I have considered keeping it when my lease ends in March.

  • We have an Acura MDX (bought it used a few months ago).  We absolutely love it.  It helped that two of our friends raved about theirs and recommended it (also lots of positive reviews out there in cyberspace).  It has a third row that folds down.  There is SO much room.  You could easily fit two, if not three car seats in the second row.  We have the car seat in the second row and our 110 pound dog goes in the back with the third row down.

My ILs have a CR-V and we like it.  We helped them drive it to Florida and there seemed to be just enough room.

  • We went with the Nissan Murano and really, really love it.
  • We have a Honda Pilot, which has three rows. We fit, 2 car seats, 2 adults and 2 85lbs dogs in the folded down 3rd row, plus still have room for bags etc. We have done long distance trips in our pilot and just love it. Doesn't get great gas mileage (20 mpg), but for mid-size SUV, it works for us and our needs.

I think a CR-V would be fine for 2 adults and 2 car seats, dog plus gear on a regular basis might be tough.

My gf has a CR-V too and when they went on vacation a few weeks, they decided it was easier to just take two cars than try to pack everything (2 adults, 2 kids/carseats, gear for a week and taking the dog to the kennel).

If you got a carrier it might be fine if you only need to travel w/ lots of stuff occassionally, but on a regular basis, I'd probably get some thing w/a  3rd row or a minivan.

  • I seriously love my Equinox but its the same size class as a CRV (small SUV). It is perfect for us and the two kids but add a dog to the mix and it would be a stretch.

I do like the GMC Acadia a lot. My neighbor has one and it is really nice, she has kids/dogs etc.

I'd agree with Kathryn.  You could probably fit all your stuff in there (people, dogs, bags, etc) but it will get crowded if you have to do it often.  It really depends on what you want to spend.  The Highlander/MDX/Pilot are the next size up, and will therefore obviously have more space.  That being said, we currently have 1 carseat, a 75lb dog, and can fit a lot of stuff in the back, so I don't see us getting a new car whenever kidlet #2 may come into the picture.

  • So, I ended up getting something I never thought I would lol. Stick out tongue I ended up going with the Subaru Outback. We tried 2 carseats, our dog and a hockey bag to see how it would fit and it was so much roomier than I thought! I've always been a SUV girl (growing up in Maine), so I was shocked to see that I went this way - but I am excited, I get it tonight!!! Smile

Congrats!  My mom has an Outback and really likes it.  I'm glad everything fits...the gas mileage is decent too, right?

I think the gas mileage is pretty similiar to other SUVs since we opted for the 6 cyclinder. The 4 cylinders get better mileage, but I wanted the SUV power
