Greetings all! I am finally getting a chance to post about my new baby boy.
Henry Michael made his entrance into the world on Friday July 13th at 9 lbs 4 oz. He was delivered in the water at a freestanding birth center after only 7.5 hours of labor. The longer birth story is below if you are interested.
I had timeable contractions both Tues and Wed of that week during the day that went away after 5-7 hours, each day they were a little stronger. I did acupuncture on both Tuesday and Thursday. I had my midwife appointment on Thurs the 12th in the late afternoon and had my first check, 4cm! I had never been so happy about an internal before!
That night, I started getting contractions again right as I was going to bed. Initially spaced at about 10 min. They were stronger than the previous rounds had been, but tried to sleep between them (kind of successful). I got up around 1 and went downstairs so DH could sleep and started timing them. Some I had to vocalize through, and others weren?t too bad, it definitely depended on the position I was in (I was most comfortable bending over holding onto the couch or on my knees over the yoga ball. They got much closer together but shorter around 3, so I woke up DH and got into the shower to see if that would feel better. We called my mom to come stay with DS and called the midwife around 4, and got in the car to head to the birth center at 4:30. On the way, we were on the road with people headed to work really early, and at one light, I was having a contraction and both my window and the van next to me had our windows down a bit. The guy in the van gunned it when the light changed, I think I freaked him out!
When I got to the birth center I wanted to try the tub to see how it felt, and kind of expected to be laboring for awhile. They checked me before I got in the tub and I was at a 9. Needless to say, the tub was awesome and I didn't want to leave. I started pushing on some of my contractions as I felt like it, originally squatting, but then turned to sit on my side. I had a student midwife (Cory) doing the majority of the assisting and coaching, and she was great. DH kept reminding me to breathe down, and the MWs would remind me to let the baby's head stretch me. I liked not having to be told to push with every contraction like I was with DS in the hospital, and I really felt in tune with my body (it being #2 may have been part of it too). The baby came out at 5:57am on Friday the 13th, they put him on my chest while still in the water, then because we were Team Green, we rolled him for DH to announce boy or girl. It's our 2nd boy! I got out of the tub and onto the bed where I delivered the placenta, then we did skin to skin for a few hours. He pooped and peed on me, and again on the scale when they weighed him. He came in at 9lbs 4 oz and 21 in long. It was a great birth experience, though kind of happened faster than I expected, so it took a bit to absorb it. We had mentally prepared and made a big list of coping techniques for labor that we didn?t really need to refer to because it happened pretty fast and I labored for a few hours while DH slept.
Those of you still waiting, remember you can do anything! Your body was made for this. Listen to it and let your instinct help guide you both during labor and in being a mom. Good luck!
Re: Henry Michael's water birth
Amazing story! Thank you for sharing.
I am planning for a water birth as well! Good to hear from someone who had one.
Congrats! That is so awesome. I am hoping to have a home birth or go to a free standing BC if we decide to go with the midwives that offer that option. So encouraging to hear of women that are able to have that control over their birth.
