Breastfeeding

Have to leave baby at 2 weeks old - what to do?

I had to have a root canal at 39 weeks pregnant with DS. Now, next week I have to go be fitted for my crown and have a permanent filling placed, which they tell me is a 2 hour appointment. I'm not planning on pumping and giving a bottle this soon. My only idea is to try and cluster feed him for a few hours before my appt (like making sure he wakes every hour to feed) but I'm terrified he'll want to eat while I'm gone and I'm not leaving him with anything. What would you do??

  • Can you pump and cup or spoon feed? Is your goal to avoid introducing a bottle, or to avoid pumping?

  • Both really, if that's possible.

  • Hmm...I'd probably see if someone could bring him to the appointment with you so you could nurse right before and during if need be.  Although I have no idea if you would be able to take a break during such an appointment or not.

If that wouldn't work, I would pump a bit and leave it just in case.  The spoon feeding won't mess anything up for you.

And he may just sleep through the whole thing anyway!

  • If your set on not pumping or bottle feeding I might start a conversation with your dentist.  Ask if you could they could block out an extra hour for the appointment and if there would be a logical time to give you a break and you could feed then.  It does mean having to bring the baby and who ever is caring for the LO to dentist office, but that might work.  Or really push them to make it 2 appointments even if they are just 1 day apart.  I have 2 crowns and am trying to remember, but I don't think the fittings took 2 hours.

  • I would have someone come with me, bring the baby (not even necessarily into the office, but let her sleep in the car or stroller with the caregiver), and ask for a break to  nurse if necessary.

My dentist makes his crowns in office and there is quite a bit of waiting around time where I'm on my own. And the whole thing is generally less than 2 hours.

Does your LO sleep well in a stroller? Or a carrier? Or a carseat?

I'd try to keep LO up before the appointment, cluster feed, and then hand a totally milk-drunk baby off to caregiver with the stroller/carrier/whatever baby containment device and then have them go for a nice loooong walk (or drive). My kids were both totally lulled to sleep by motion at that age, especially in a stroller or a carseat. Keeping them moving pretty much guaranteed they'd stay asleep.

I would hand express or pump a little (like an oz or two at most), or have some formula on hand if you don't want to pump, just in case LO does wake up and decide they are hungry. The single feeding extra pumping beyond your LO's consumption shouldn't cause oversupply, nor should a single feeding of your LO taking formula cause your supply to tank. I would use a syringe or a spoon, since your goal is just to take the edge off the hunger until you and your boobs return an hour later. But, I really don't think you'd need it, honestly. Just keep the baby moving, and my experience, at this age, they just keep sleeping. Think of it like a baby-care version of Speed, that Keanu Reeves movie.

    Great reply. Ditto!
