Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone else's LO not walking close to a year?

DD is about 2 weeks from being 1 and still isn't walking. She is up one every other milestone and will toddle if holding onto your fingers. She can also stand unassisted for a minute or two but if she realizes you let go will usually sit right down. I am not worried, just wondering if there are any others like her out there.
I heard somewhere that it is actually best if they wait to walk until after a year for some sort of muscle development but it seems like the norm is that they walk before a year.

  • My DS will be 1 this weekend is at about the same stage as your DD. He stands really well, will even bounce while standing and has taken a step. But then he realizes he doesn't have anything to grab onto and will sit down. I figure when he feels confident he will go for it! He walks really well behind his push toys to so I just make sure he gets good practice with that to help with his balance and confidence.

  • Nope, NBD, and thank GOD.  You think your kid's trouble as a crawler?  Wait until they can walk!  The age range for walking is from 9 mos-18 mos so I wouldn't even think about whether they can walk or not until you get closer to the max. mark.  DD didn't walk until 15 mos.  I have a feeling DS will walk sooner but I'm NOT in any hurry for this little troublemaker to be more mobile!

  • Lol! Well it is good to know my DD isn't the only one.

She can use her push toy on carpet but when she tried on the hard wood floor it would go to fast for her and then she tried to sit down, it rolled backward and on top of her. No harm done but she was pretty confused about what happened. Sadly 90% of our house is hard wood too.

  • My DD isnt close. She can pull to stand and cruise on furniture but cannot stand unassisted.  Also she refuses to even try to walk while holding my hands.  Eveerytime i try she goes deadfish on me!!  Im not worried she was later than average for almost all her milestones but is a smart happy baby

  • Not walking here either.

He crawls everywhere, cruises on furniture and walks when he gets up behind his push walker. He has only randomly stood unassisted for a few seconds. I'm not concerned.

  • If I had answered this yesterday, I would have said ditto to PPs.  DD can cruise and crawl all over the place - but had no desire to 'practice walk'.  Out of the blue last night she took 2 steps.  I flipped out and yelled for my husband.  She took two more steps for him.  That is it, though. So who knows.  She may be on the verge, or not.  I just keep telling myself it will happen when it is supposed to and there is no rush.

But now I am confused if I should record these steps in her baby book - or wait for something more consistent.

  • Yep, we are exactly where you are. I get really jealous of my friends who post videos on facebook of their 8 month old walking on their own. And we're mere weeks away from a year and are perfectly content crawling and cruising.

  • My monkey will be 1 next friday and she isn't walking yet. She crawls like crazy, pulls herself up on furniture, can stand for a couple of minutes and even has a few words down. She walks with a walker toy or holding on to hands.

I'm not to worried though, she's just not ready and a lot of babies don't walk before one. My pediatrician has reassured me on that, and said not to force it because it might discourage her from wanting to do it. She's still wobbly so I figure she just needs to practice her balance a little more. Probably sooner then later she will pop up on her feet and just walk.
