opinions about donating milk

Hi girls, I posted on the 6-12 month board too, but I 'know' you all better over here.  So....what is your opinion of donating extra breast milk?

I just spoke with an LC and she recommended that I give my extra milk to my own kids.  Basically stating, "Your babies health first."  Of course, I want my kids to be healthy...but they are already,  I still bf them 4 times a day.  My plan was just to donate what I pump out before bed (6-8oz, which would be around 200 oz if I just do it for the month of December).  I just introduced cow's milk and they now have that in their bedtime bottle, instead of bm.  I initially planned on weaning my body of the night pump by my birthday next week as a sort of selfish luxury so I wouldn't have to pump before bed. Then I watched all the Christmas movies that started yesterday and got all Christmas spirit-y and thought that donating milk for a month would be a nice thing to do.  Anyway, I got ahold of a milk bank and do plan on donating, I am just sort of miffed at the LC's comment.  There are so many babies that could benefit from donated milk and here she is basically turning away a possible donor.

So, what do you think?

Re: opinions about donating milk

  • My personal experience with our hospitals LC was that she was boobie brigade/nipple nazi. She even called me a liar when I told her I was not producing anything after 10 days. So, here is my take. Do it. Make the donation, forget what she said to you. There are lots of babies out there whose mama's can't feed them.

  • I just donated 500 oz on Friday.  I had pumped like crazy when I was on maternity leave so the girls could have bm for as long as possible.  When we started feeding them the frozen stuff, they wouldn't have anything to do with it.  So, I called the milk bank and asked to bring it in.  During my initial call I got the exact same attitude out of the employee.  She questioned why we weren't trying harder to give the milk to our own children.  I was very very turned off by her attitude.  Later I talked to the director and she was much more friendly so I decided to go ahead with it.  There is a lot of paperwork involved and you also have to have a blood test, but that's it.  Mine was a one-time donation, but if I was able to, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
  • I think it's wonderful and if you are able to do it....go for it!  It's something I plan to look into in the future!
  • I wanted to donate the extra I had.  My girls never latched and always got pumped bm.  Then we had to travel out of town for 10 days and my supply disappeared. My girls were getting formula exclusively for about a week straight I had about 100oz in our freezer at home. When I tried to give them a 50/50 bottle, they ended up spitting up and then got very constipated so we didn't want to mix anymore.

I couldn't donate it though because there are strict rules.  Make sure you do some research.  A lot of places have their own containers they want the milk to go in and other requirements about quantity.  Good luck.  I wish I could have done it.  It sucked throwing out all that milk.

  • If you don't feel that you need it, I say go for it. My friend gets 90% of her bm donated and she is soooo greatful.
