Multiples

Those who EP for multiples in the past...

What was your max daily amount pumped? I've recently been told that babies tend to average out taking in around 25 oz/day of BM. Were you able to achieve 50 oz pumped in a day?? That seems completely unattainable right now (as I had been celebrating pumping 10 oz so far today...) That kind of took the wind out of my sail!

Re: Those who EP for multiples in the past...

  • I have been EPing for 12 weeks now and my supply has increased as they have taken more.  I have an over supply and am able to freeze some everyday, but even I have anxiety about making 50 ounces a day!  Yikes!  It might be helpful for you to track how much you are pumping everyday for a week or so and if it decreases or you aren't staying steady, contact a LC to talk about ways to increase your supply.  I think any breastmilk is better than none! :)  Way to go with pumping, it's hard work!!!

  • It one point I had 80 oz on the fridge.

I would average about 12 oz per session 4-6 times a day. Totally doable, but you really have to work at it.

  • at the height of my pumping career hah i was averaging 30ish. that was for my trips. eping for my singleton was a bust i made max of 12 oz per day. with the trips i didnt wanted a repeat terrible experience so as soon as i popped those babies out i started taking mother milk tablets and domperidone. i think the combo certainly helped. i also pumped every 2 hours until my supply was decent then was able to go a little longer between pumps.  you can always power pump to try to get more. although that never worked for me. kellymom has a lot of eping information. theres nothing wrong with supplementing do the best you can dont stress it it just decreases your supply...dont forget to chug water

  • I pump 7-8 times a day for 15 minutes and am producing about 70-80 oz a day. However I have had good supply with my singletons as well, had enough freezer milk for my second son for several months after I quit pumping at work. I didn't get my milk in until day 6, and it wasn't much, partially due to weak latches and exhaustion. I started reglan and got my supply up and make sure to pump almost every time the babies eat (my husband takes one feeding at night). I also just restarted mothers milk tea and make sure to drink double what I pump every time so I stay hydrated. It is a lot of work but doable and it really isn't a big deal if you have to supplement with formula too. Good luck!

  • It amazes me how much they pump!

And if anyone sees this, did you pump that much from the beginning or did you "build up" your supply somehow?

  • Unfortunately, I never produced that much milk and used combo of formula/BM for my twins.

I did try domperidone, mothers milk tea, all the herbal supplements, oatmeal cookie receipe, pumped every 3 hours around the clock, and still was not able to produce enough to exclusively BF even 1 twin.  I did a combo of BF and pumping until 6 months old, then switched to exclusively pumping between 6 months and 9 months old.

I finally threw in the towel just after 9 months old.  I had been battling a month long influx of illness with colds, sinus infection, and strep throat, and my body stopped producing milk.  So the decision was made for me when to stop.

If you need to supplement with formula, go ahead and don't feel bad about it.  Any amount of BM is great for the babies.

  • My girls are almost 5 months. On average, they take in a total of about 60 oz a day. On an average day, I pump around 52-55 oz, so yes, it is possible!

  • I never made more than 24-26 oz / day.  I did EVERYTHING.  It's ust all I ever made.  And I'm darn proud that I kept it up for 10.5 months.

You can only do what you can do.

As someone who has worked in lactation for over 10 years....some women assume because they made it 60+ / day that everyone can.  That's just not true.  Chances are if you're just making 10 oz / day at one month out you're not as likely to be the type to make 60 oz /day.  But only time will tell.  Some women just make more.  I know that I did everything humanly possibly to increase my supply.

    Breastfeeding isn't all or nothing.

    Keep it up!

  • I never made enough to give them all breastmilk. I got close to 40oz a day at the end before I started weaning from the pump. We did 2 out of 7 bottles a day of formula from birth to 3 months, so my supply did increase a little as time went on as they increased their ounces consumed. It did seem to max out at the 35- 40oz though.

I started taking Motherlove More Milk Plus Special Blend. It's hard to say if it helped, but I did notice an increase around that time. I noticed I was able to pump more when I got decent sleep, so that was rare :)

  • I maxed out at 20oz/day but I had pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome at delivery, so I was very anemic. The babies wouldn't latch at all either, so I had to rely on the pump for a supply. I think if they had latched, I wouldn't have struggled so much. My son started latching at 10 wks and I do think my supply increased some then. Now, I nurse them both at each feeding and then they get a bottle of formula, but I feel like some BM is better than none!

I also took all the supplements, Fenugreek, lactation cookies, pumped 8x/day for 25-45 minutes each session, etc, etc.

  • I EP for 11 months but had to start supplementing around month 10. I pumped every 3-4 hours around the clock until about 6 months then I let myself go a little longer at night. It's completely doable but takes a lot of dedication.

    Good luck!

  • You can increase supply a little with things like fenugreek and oatmeal, you can increase it a little more with reglan (my milk wasn't coming in) or domperidone, but I think your ultimate supply is just what your body produces. If you bf, the baby would stay on longer to get/promote more milk but that is hard to replicate with a pump. I have had an amazing supply with all of my kids and am super fortunate in that. I have had friends who have done everything but just don't. It is really easy to feel like a failure or to compare yourself to others but just do what you can to make as much milk as you can. I supplemented with formula when I was getting started and just focused on what I was able to do, not what I couldn't.

The things that I have noticed that do make my supply go down is when I don't drink my water and when I wasn't sleeping as well at first.

  • It seems crazy now, but at one point I was able to pump 75+ oz daily. My boys usually drank 30-34 oz each at that point so I wasn't able to store a ton.

  • I also found that longer pumping sessions worked better for me than more frequent ones (after the first few months, anyway). I usually pumped 30 min then kept pumping until I got one final let-down.
