So, I was advised by my OB to schedule an induction by 41 weeks. I want to deliver naturally with as little intervention as possible so I said I'd like to do it the last minute at 41 weeks (tomorrow). I was about 3 cm and 60% at 40 weeks and have been having irregular (albeit painful) contractions for a few days off and on since that appointment.
Well, today I've been to the bathroom twice and lost some mucus plug once and then a bit of blood-tinged mucus the second time. I'm getting infrequent contractions again today. I already have an induction scheduled for tomorrow, but do you think these signs warrant waiting another day or so? For all I know I could go into labor tonight, but I'm wondering what I should do.
Would you call the OB and ask for another day if possible?!? I finally feel like I came to terms with the induction but now I'm really second guessing it again after seeing what I feel was bloody show.
TIA for your input!!
Re: Need your opinion regarding induction extension..
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
I am in the same boat, 41 weeks 5 days tomorrow and induction scheduled. I am working with a midwifery group and they are going to try to break my water first and see if things will progress naturally. I lost my mucus plug 2 weeks ago and have had three spells of 3+ hours of consistent contractions that just stopped and no baby yet. I feel like I could go into labor at any moment but have yet to do so. I started maternity leave last Monday so I am hoping this baby comes easily tomorrow. Ask them about induction options that don't use meds, ie water break, foley bulb etc.... Good Luck!
I have no experience with induction, but I can say that I don't think you have to "ask". You are in control - this is your body and your baby.
I personally, would tell, not ask. But that's just my .02.
I agree. Call and politely tell them you will be canceling your induction. If the dr. insists, politely tell him/her you won't be showing up.
You can do this, but honestly it can set you up for fighting your doctor and the nursing staff for your entire delivery. I would suggest instead having a conversation with your doctor where you talk about what's been happening, explain that you would like to wait a few more days, and ask how you can make that happen. Explain your goals. Ask what he feels the risks of waiting at this point are. Basically, show that you respect his medical knowledge and ask him to respect your wishes as this baby's mother. Communicate that if there is something that suggests that your baby is truly in danger, you will agree to induction or any intervention that is required in a heart beat. Try to help him understand that the experience of going into labor on your own is an experience that is important to you and ask him, if possible, to help protect that experience. The goal is to get your doctor on YOUR side... not fighting with him. It makes for a much more pleasant delivery experience.
You could always just call and let them know you're already in early labor, so you'll come in when they're 5-1-1 or whatever their protocol is for active labor.
If you've been having painful, irregular contractions for a few days, you might want to look at the spinning babies website and note the things to do for posterior and acyclitic babies, just in case that's what's going on with you.

I would call with an upbeat attitude and tell them "I've been having irregular contractions and lost my mucus plug, so unless there's any immediate danger to the baby in progressing naturally, I'll see you when I'm at 5-1-1" (or whatever the agreement with your doc is). To me, I'm with those who say that "asking" implies that this is his decision, but you do still want to have a good working rapport with the medical staff attending your delivery. Give them a chance to share concerns and talk about them, but don't be afraid to be assertive or to press if the reasoning is simply "but you're going past 41 weeks."
Hey, here's hoping that by the time you read this you're going on full-out labor
