I have loved and admired Marilyn Monroe since I was a little girl. A few years ago (before I was even married) I decided I loved the name Monroe as a FN for a little girl. Recently, Mariah Carey named her daughter that, and I threw Monroe off my list because I didn't want people to think I "got" that name from her, or that the name was "inspired" by her in any way. A few people have told me this would've NEVER occured to them, and I should reconsider it as a name. What do you think?
Re: Will people think I'm a copycat?
My mother was determined to name me Jessica- and did so even after 3 other people she knew named their babies Jessica. But you know what? She hasn't seen those people in over 20 years so its never mattered. I doubt you'll ever run into Mariah Carey!
That wouldnt change my mind & it wouldnt even cross my mind. I would think Marilyn Monroe if anything. & I think it is adorable!

Yeah, what she said
If you love it go for it don't let Mariah Carey make you think twice about it !
I agree with this. No offense to Ms. Carey, but she's not as much in the limelight as some celebs. I hadn't even heard her baby's name (now if you picked the same name as a Kardashian... j/k but then the thought might cross my mind)
If I met a little girl named Monroe, my first thought would be that her parents were big Marilyn Monroe fans.
Even though Mariah Carey used it first, I don't associate her with the name. Marilyn is still the icon.
That said, I think Marilyn is a much, MUCH nicer name than Monroe. I really can't say that enough.
This
I doubt most people know Mariah's kids' names (I don't).
What DID come to mind when I saw Monroe as a first name was Jm J. Bullock's character on Too Close for Comfort. I can't shake the association (I definitely just dated myself).

This...there is nothing remotely attractive or feminine about the name Monroe.
ETA: I do know that Mariah Carey named her daughter Monroe, because the media mocked the names of both her kids.
I agree it sounds very masculine, but Roe would be an adorable NN and that sounds more feminine to me. It's really cute and spunky. To answer your question, name your daughter what you want. The whole Mariah Carey thing would not have occurred to me and I doubt thar there are many people that are privy to the fact that her daughter is even named that.
All this. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder why Marilyn hasn't had a resurgence in popularity. Similar names (like Madeline, and lots of names ending in-lyn) have come back like crazy, and Marilyn has the beautiful Hollywood starlet feel thanks to Ms. Monroe. Yet, you never hear Marilyn, so it's a lot fresher than Madeline et al.
That's it, I've decided. You should name your child Marilyn.
I like Marilyn much better too. I remember the media mocking the names as well. NN Roe=fish eggs

I don't take one single minute for granted.
This. And maybe it's because I live all the way over in Africa, but I had NO idea that MC had a kid named Monroe. In fact, I haven't known anything about MC's life in about 10 years. If you do go with Monroe, I'm sure MC's kid won't be an issue.
