2nd Trimester

holy constipation...i know TMI

Okay ladies I am 26.5 weeks preggers and have tried almost everything to help deal with my "issue." I have tried changing my prenatals, taking colace, taking milk of mag, exercising, increasing fiber, etc! Does anyone have any suggestions of something that may help!? Thanks!!

  • I know this may sound crazy and really weird, but whenever I get to that "last straw idea", I eat something like taco bell or IHOP. The oils/grease that they use just ruin my stomach and make me have to go. Like I said, weird and crazy, but possibly worth a shot?

  • Have you tried a small cup of coffee? That seems to always do the trick for me.

    I used to take this before I got KU. Worked well, but I generally needed to take more than the specified dose. And careful, sometimes it will sneak up on you!

    In the same vein as flax cereal, if you can find just ground flax seed try a few Tbsp of that in some peanut butter. It helps also. Just make sure you store it in the fridge. And I also use the ground flax seed to make what I like to call a 'poop cookie'. The recipe makes about 3 average sized cookies. Eat them and feel better!

    1 Tbsp white sugar

    1 Tbsp brown sugar

    1/2 Tbsp butter

    3 Tbsp ground flax seed

    1 Tbsp water or milk

    splash of vanilla

    pinch of salt

    pinch of baking soda

    1/4 c. plus 1 Tbsp flour

    1-2 Tbsp chocolate chips if desired

    Mix everything in a bowl adding a splash more milk/water if it's not coming together. Bake 350 for 10-12 min.

  • Oatmeal with raisins has helped me.  I am sorry you are struggling with this!

    We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.  

    We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.


  • Sorry to hear you are dealing with this :(  It has been an issue for me this entire pregnancy so far.  Dr told me I can take pretty much anything over the counter to get things moving and told me I should have a BM at least every 48 hours.  I have been using the overnight Ducolax if I have too.  Worst comes to worst use an enema...I know it doesn't sound fun, but it comes with relief quickly!  GL :)

  • I have had WAY too much experience with this-even before becoming pregnant. I can say that for me miralax (especially in a warm liquid-tea/soup) always gets me going.  It is totally safe, so you might give it a try

  • I know it's not very appetizing but it's what the nurses gave me after my son was born. . .warm prune juice. Did the trick!

  • Anything hot seems to help me, doesn't even need to be coffee, hot tea.  And my DH although obviously not quite the same but he thinks a coke helps him but that might work for him cause he mostly avoids soda so who knows.  Good luck, lately I feel like my body only likes to go like every other day, kind of annoying but I can deal.

    Poop cookie!! Hahahaha!! That's hilarious. I am so beyond help. I will spare you all the details of what I have had to resort to b/c my constipation has been so bad. Praying that nature mama magnesium does the trick & thanks for the warning. OP, good luck to you!

  • I agree with the Miralax suggestion. I've been constipated since 5 weeks and have tried all the same things you have. The only thing that has really helped is Miralax. The trick is you have to use it consistently. If I start feeling better and stop taking it, I immediately get horribly backed up again. I've learned I have to take it every day for it to be effective. And even still, I'm not completely regular again. But at least I'm going a little bit here and there - better than before!

  • Milk of Mag was my miracle!  I second the miralax or coffee idea also-usually that got me going before recently.  

     

    Along with what a PP said-when I used to work in cardiac ICU we would get pt's that would get backed up and for whatever reason didn't/couldn't take milk of mag and we would take about 4 oz prune juice, 1 tsp of margarine, heat it all up (to melt the margarine and get it mixed up) and have them drink that.  It is the most disgusting thing ever to drink, but every time we tried there was results!  Good luck!

  • I am having this problem too. =( It is so uncomfortable!
  • I take Senokot about every other day (I'm on Zofran, which causes constipation). The Senokot will always produce a BM in about 12 hours, and its not generally a painful one (though some cramping usually comes with it).  I think it is less habit-forming than Miralax, and on my OB's recommended list.

    Like you, I have tried everything and the one thing that I find helps is drinking a cup of coffee.
